REAPER CONTEST - AUGUST 2020
(ONLY REAPER PLUGINS ALLOWED)

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

MIXING: 1-15 August
VOTING: 20-26 August
RESULTS: 28 August
FEEDBACK: 29-31 August

__________________________________________________

I missed the Reaper Contest so I decided (with Dave's permission) to try to revive it. Hope you have fun with these tracks.

Let's kick things off with Higher by The OG's.

You can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.

No prize this month, aside from the customary track-picking privileges for the next month's contest.

Please bee patient as I work out the kinks with the web site and the contest. I'd welcome any feedback or suggestions for improvements.

Happy mixing!
-Daryl

Dude life changes a LOT and so too did my JOB which is currently working from home, calling folks who tested for COVID19 and giving them their test results!

I work 11:30am to 8pm Saturday thru Wednesday. Still working for the same call center. The client is HHS (Health and Home Services, a division of Homeland Security) instead of the VA now. Not a bad job and we live within 2 miles of the facility should they decide to call us back to work there. But for now my wife and I have a couple workstations with dual monitors set up on our dining room table.

That is OUR new reality!

Hi Daryl,
Archive section on your new website does not work as it seems

EDIT:
Hmm, maybe because there is no archived content yet, as previously it was Dave's website?
Anyway, the links should work and display the correct page with empty contents then.

Yeah, it's still a work in progress. The archive section I haven't given much thought to yet. But I'll put some sort of coming soon page up shortly. Thanks for the feedback.

Default Ooh yeah!

So glad this is back. Huge props for getting it going again.
Made the mistake of entering the produce like a pro ratemymix thing, which was a total crock, so really happy this oasis of sanity is back. I'm in!

Hi

Firstly thank you for running this. I'm a newbie who bought the PIA bundle and realised that i need to learn the basics first so this is ideal.

One thing (for now) is Reeq allowed? I think i installed this manually??! But it's a JS plugin? Is there a list of JSFX so i can check that i'm not using something i should be?

Thanks

Yes, free jsfx are allowed. You just need to include anything not in the base reaper installation in your zipped submission file.

I'm not sure if there is a tool to check whether a specific jsfx plugin was included with Reaper, that's something I'll try to explore.

Thanks for the quick answer.

I run off a portable install. What i'll do before i submit is do a fresh portable install to check everything works stock and if there's stuff like Reeq needed i'll add that in to the submission.

"The mix averages no more than -14 LUFS and peaks at -1.0dB or less"

you don't use averages with LUFS. It's either integrated, short term or momentary.

edit -

Can't upload my mix.

You're right, it should say 'measures no more the -14 LUFS (integrated)' -- will fix in the near future

That's odd, not sure why. It should be working off the file's mime-type. I've tested in Firefox/Chrome/Safari (I don't have edge or IE on this computer, let me know if you're using one of those), but maybe I'll change it to just work off the filename. In the meantime, if you can send me a dropbox or google drive link you can submit that way.

**edit** I might have been missing a few mime-types for the zip file. It should be fixed now if you don't mind trying again.

Doh! sorry to be using you guys as guinea pigs. It's working here, but I've noticed the email validator is a little funky when the browser autocompletes the field. working on that now, but in the meantime try manually entering your email address.

**edit** okay, I've disabled autocomplete on the form, so assuming that was the problem it should work now.

No, no uploads have gone thru yet. I didn't realize that google cloud services capped file size at 32mb even though it's just routing thru them to my FTP. I'll hopefully have a remedy up in an hour or three.

Again, apologies for the problems and thanks for helping me iron them out, I appreciate it.

Was just coming to report my upload error fiasco and I see that you are already aware. I'll just CHILL out then! lol

I sent you an email thru the site regarding this as well...obviously ignore that!

I'll hope that things are working later then. I don't get much time to upload or work on these things right now...lots going on, on the home front right now (not all good either). So I'll keep an eye out for your report of progress in this matter. THANKS!

Hi friends.

Thanks for the contest and thanks for the effort tha sure is behind this.

I have a question. Is permited to use reaeq, reacomp and all the rest of rea Plugins? I have doubts about if these plugins are considered JSFX plugins.

Thanks In advanced.

Javier.

Yeah the contest rules state that you may use ONLY the STOCK and JSFX plugins.

The reason for that and the other rules is to level the playing field so that everyone has access to the exact same tracks and tools, etc...

ReaPlugs are STOCK Reaper plugins...so of course all of those are okay as is any JSFX plugins but you may need to include those in your zip file. I always put every JSFX plugin used in my project in my zip just to cover my bases although I'm pretty sure that everyone should have all of them.

Yeah I approached this a lot different to the contests of the past. In the past I would always keep my submission until the last minute tweaking as I go always giving time for my ears to rest and reset listening to other stuff in between.

I think it may have been counter-productive in a way. So this time I treated it as if I was working for a client on a deadline. I literally mixed the whole thing in about 3 hours.

This is afterall the kind of mixing service I would be providing a client and likely a much more accurate depiction of my talents/services.

Now I did NOT Render a 32-bit floating point WAV and import that into a new Reaper session and do a proper master as I would normally for a client. I just mixed it and then stuck a few stock mastering plugins on there to get it to the level that I wanted.

So it's kind of like a non-mastered or house mastered track in a way.

Of course, my mastering chain for a normal project contains a lot more tools that are not available to us in the stock plugins. So that wasn't available and so I chose to go that route.

It'll be interesting to see what feedback folks have to give on the mix!!!

I've done mine. But been busy with life etc but tomorrow I will figure out what jsfx's I've used and need to include etc. Basically what needs zipped.

Was a real struggle as only my 2nd time mixing anything I hadn't written. And first time with real drums. So I'm looking forward to seeing how others tackled the mix and what they have done in their mixes to learn from. Also what hidden gems in terms of stock plugins I'm missing out on.

Yeah I challenge myself regularly when I have time in which I consider "rehearsal time". I usually go to www.cambridge-mt.com and grab multitracks from a genre that I don't mix normally. This helps to expand your thinking and challenges your use of favorite plugins. You may find that your favorites don't always work the best in every situation.

I also generally explore my effects and see what I may be missing and what I like or dislike about certain FX.

I LOVE this contest because of the fact that you get to download other people's project files to see what chains, FX and settings they are using on specific things.

Very nice to get some perspective and expand your thinking indeed!
