Dissapointment
So today I was in one of the servers just messing around on guitar and normally I don't play guitar very much and I'm not very good but someone had the gut to just say to me "Alex, That was terrible man" nothing else, no constructive criticism like I'll usually get and I'm really disappointed because after not coming for several months I come back to that... I told him guitar isn't my instrument and no response. It just bothers me, thought I'd keep people aware.

dont worry Alex, that's the down side when it comes your playing go public...
Andy Summers used to say: "repeat your mistakes and they believe it's your personality"... more or less...

I'm not a big fan of repeating the same mistakes, I have a torture room with automatic whipping machine and if I feel I let myself down I don't go down the gym, I just have a hour workout in the torture room.

That sucks, Alex, and I'm sorry for you and for the person who was thoughtless enough to have said that. There's often a lot of negative vibe on NJ (lately? maybe always has been?). Just take it in stride, ignore it as best you can, and keep looking out for the good jams where people forget themselves (and what a-holes they can tend to be). If all else fails, just remind yourself, "Don't let the bastards get you down."

Haha I was thinking the same thing the other day so I started singing it in the mic on the Server.
It was an ok sounding cheesy sorta song but it was a big release and the people who were in a foul mood were purged of there sinful ways.
I would just put my hand on there forehead and push them backwards releasing there sins but atm NINJAM hasn't got that option. :|

foofits
hey - maybe they were referring to themselves?
idk.
just don't take things too seriously in there.
one time a guy told me, "synthany, you sound like ass".
well better to sound like ass than to be one.
anywho: keep practicin' and keep your love of playing strong.

Yeah, that sucks. When you're jamming you're really putting yourself out there and to have someone tell you it sucks... that sucks!

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, although I agree that criticism was probably in bad form.
A lot of people love to jam, but unless you're a real nurturer at heart having somebody come into the jam and take a big musical dump all over it really destroys the fun.
As you said, the guitar isn't your instrument. Perhaps the better way to start is to tune in a jazz/blues/whatever station and just jam with that for a few months. B.B. King isn't going to complain from the Cook County Jail if you mess up "How Blue Can You Get?"
As for better feedback, in a jam group there's often no quick advice you can give somebody that'll magically improve their ability. But they could have tried.
