Monitoring Effects via Audio Interface

Folks,
I am trying to figure out if there is a way to use VST effects, on input, with monitoring via the audio interface (Scarlett 2i4).

I know, I can click the record monitor on, buss the VST output, set the audio interface mix to full output, and I will hear the VST effect.

But, I'm stubborn, I'd like to hear the VST effect, without using the Reaper record monitor.

Is there a way to do this?
