A video editor which reminds me of Reaper's early days
http://www.shotcut.org/bin/view/Shotcut/WebHome
"Shotcut" is a donationware cross-platform video editor which reminds me of Reaper in its early days - quite rapid development, some neat features, and a responsive and imaginative developer.
Many video editing packages look like they were intended for use by kids - really dumbed-down interfaces - this one has an interface design intended simply for getting on with the job at hand.
It's relatively new so it hasn't yet got a fully fledged feature set, but what is there is really all you need for many straightforward video productions.
Well worth a look, either for use now or for keeping an eye on for the future.
(I have no financial or other interest, just came across it by chance).
Cheers and greetings to the old lags here!

Art Evans! Where the deuce have you been!?! But more importantly, what do you think of REAPER getting a notation editor? Never thought I'd see the day quite honestly, but it is being quite openly talked about in some parts of the forum.
Thanks for the heads up about the video editor too. You were always one of those very helpful people around the forums I thought.

Yes. Thank you. I've been looking for a video NLE with this basic style setup for a long time. I don't make enough videos to justify buying Premier, but I make enough to know I hate windows movie maker and iMovie.

Not many places! Ears too old, domestic duties too time-consuming, no particular reason to use Reaper any more - sadly.
Not much reason to use a video editor either, when it comes down to it, but the habit of enjoying the flirtation period with new software dies hard. Heh, dammit, with Reaper the flirtation turned into a full-blown passionate affair! But at least now it's all over I don't have to lie to my wife any more and I'm saving a bomb on those hotel bills...

Thanks Art, I'll check it out too. One can never have enough (video) software, right?

I'll just add that personally I found it worth viewing the introductory videos for Shotcut (on the site) as - perhaps like Reaper - a simple interface hides some neat functions, and there's some "lateral thinking" aspects of the design which the video helps explain. For instance, I didn't check out "File > Open Other" for a few days, wherein you find colour generation and network input and other such things lurking. Also see the Google+ forum at https://plus.google.com/u/0/communit...76401772983232 where you can find some notes about how to do titling (posted by me in my real name!) amongst other stuff.
And now I'll let you good people get back to Reaper!

Wow! -- thanks for the heads up. Very interesting. A little buggy still (saw a couple minor editing things and a crash) but i'm sure it'll get worked out. Overall very clean and impressive!
No titling, but you can overlay/composite frames you make yourself... I'm really excited for this project. Seems like all the basics are getting covered. And there's a Linux version. I'm swooning. I may even have to donate!
I'm excited to try my next video project with it. I will watch some tutorials, though... as others mentioned there are some counter-intuitive things going on. :-)

See https://plus.google.com/104605175133...ts/H7oec4U6J7A for simple titling instructions. (Instructions for simple titling).
Desperately trying to make this thread Reaper-relevant, I'll mention that you can create an audio-only track in Shotcut and bring in some background music you created in Reaper. OK, well, I admit you can do that in any video editor...
Yes, the app has bugs and saving regularly is a good idea, but having reported to the developer that typing "S" to split a clip is causing the clip's audio to corrupt resulted in a reply saying it would be fixed in a couple of days and a new version would then be posted. Quite like Cockos' responsive developers, though I recall last time I reported a significant bug in Reaper (several years back) a fix was online in 20 minutes!

The more I look into this thing the more I like it. Excited to see it develop.

Thanks for the post.
Blender may also be of interest to people:
http://www.blender.org/
Blender has a video editor, is open source, is multi-platform, and can do 3D editing, animation, and compositing as well.

Whoa .....
Bookmarked for sure. Anyone know how it fares as a regular NLE? The most advanced thing I need is sequence nesting and maybe adjustment layers with some fx (like adobe premiere).
