Default Sleep Deprived Drive

I have one drive that Reaper sometimes accesses. The problem is, the damned drive keeps going to sleep! I've tried giving it No-Doze, cocaine, over-the-counter speed and a few other homeopathic cures but it just keeps going to sleep. How can I permanently wake this drive?

Is this Windows??

If so you can go into the power management controls and set the OS to not put the drives to sleep (at least you could the last time I checked!).

Sometimes the drive manufacturer also sets up the drives to go into various stages of "sleep" after non-activity.

For instance, this is one difference between "PC" and "NAS" drives. Generally NAS drives do not sleep as they must be available instantly, but so-called "green" drives get drowsy very quickly.

You might have to consult the drive Manufacturer's support site.
Sometimes they will have tools you can download that will allow changing the drives power-saving strategy as well.

Hope this helps...

External, internal? What drive is it, exactly?

Yes, internal. WDC WD5000AAKS-00V1AO ATA.

EDIT: This drive was added by me.

I just thought there might be an easy way to tell it not to go to sleep?

There is. Go into your hardware settings, check out the performance settings for that drive and make sure you have "hard drive sleep" set to "never." As a general rule of thumb its worth setting all your power, display, drive etc options to off or as fast as you can to get the best performance. Several current threads with a link to optimising your computer, plus there is also an excellent free one on the Focusrite website specifically for win10.

Some external USB drives will "go to sleep" ignoring OS drive sleep preferences. There's nothing you can do about to my knowledge. There's going to be that 15 second or whatever it is wake up period when something like Reaper queries the filesystem.

I've never had this experience with an internal drive ignoring system preferences though. I'm OSX. If that's a Windows thing... alright then. Otherwise I'd return a drive if it turned out to have some weird firmware that could do that. (Making darn sure I wasn't being an idiot first of course!)

I thought I had done that but I'll check to see if I missed that drive for some reason. Thanks!

This is an internal drive that I took out of the computer that my current computer replaced.

Yep, I missed one. I found it in Power Management and switched it to never and it is working how I want now. Thank you all! Much appreciated!

I have several of those, both external and internal. Should work with standard APCI. Depends on the firmware. It's what makes a WD Blue different from a WG Black, fi.

Besides settings in Windows, have you checked BIOS?

It's pATA, so my memory is hazy, but I don't expect any problems with these. There's some info here:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/people-w...roblem.318273/

Leading to WD tools:

https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?DL

You need WDIdleDisable Tool to change the setting in the firmware.

EDIT:

obviously didn't read you last post. I'll just leave it, might be usefull to someone else...
