Default Why no track template for master track?

Why can't I save/restore a track template for the master track?
When having only master track selected and trying 'Save track as template' Reaper says 'Error No tracks selected".

Very good question! One might think, an FX chain would accomplish the same task, but it's also a matter of hardware outputs.

Save it as a project template.

Yes, of course, but how to deal with an already existing external, or older, project you have to work on?

Well what initiated this thread was the A plugin for periodic muting? thread because I had the idea to do the periodic muting with a looped volume automation item on the master track which could be saved/restored via a master track template and was surprised it didn't work.

But then again loading the pre-made automation item is probably just as quick as loading the master track template, but hardware outputs assignments as mentioned is a good point for it imo. And agreed, project template doesn't cut it in this case for existing projects.

There might be a workaround in the form of MPL's "Import Session" script though, which oddly enough can import/load/overwrite any track, including the master track plus i/o's and automation.
I haven't actually tried the latter myself, but usually the script works beautifully.
