Default Ability to monitor tracks vanishes

Background me: very new to Reaper, but been a Linux guy since 1995, and former Cakewalk Sonar user 'back in the day'.

So, for reasons unknown, in Reaper, both of the two projects I've put some more extended time into building out have stopped letting me monitor the recording tracks. I am hoping this is just me being a newbie and accidentally setting something that messes it up so I can't monitor and one of you kind people can tell me what.

Behavior description:

Example 1: when I create-new project, add an audio track, select input 2 on my Focusrite Solo, and hit the record button for the track, and viola - I hear everything I play come out my headphones. If I add effects to either the track or the mains, I hear the results of those effects in my headphones. So post-mix monitor. Perfect.

Example 2: On a project I've put some time and effort into, has DrumGizmo+16 tracks, and 10 audio tracks, it used to work like example 1. But now, I just noticed that whenever I hit 'record' button for a track and play guitar into it, I see the VU meter on the track moving, but I get nothing out the headphones, and master track VU never flickers. If I hit record and play something, it still records the input, I just don't get any monitoring of it.

Surely there some "monitor track in master mix" or somesuch setting I've accidentally clicked and now can't find?

Any help appreciated.

So - maybe resolved - toggling the entire EFX bus on the master track off and back on, and it works now. (scratches head). Anyway, carry on.

Thanks! Fair warning, probably not my last dumb question, LOL.
