Have you had a look at the free CakeWalk DAW (for Windows)?, that DAW also includes a few old but decent VSTi (Drums, Strings, Bass), and some other stuff, not sure it does what you really need, but worth a look for free.

$60 is a very reasonable price for what REAPER can do, the v5 getting started guide is great, and they keep adding more new videos!
Best of luck!

When you mentioned Tardigrades in a vacuum I thought it was about dust mites in a vacuum cleaner, and so being the info-junkie that I am, I just had to look this up ....

Interesting little creatures, these Tarddies ... microscopic critters with 8 legs classified as "animals" rather than insects ... able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, send 'em up into orbit and they'll just hang in there for a hundred years, rolled up into a ball soaking in sunlight .. then bring 'em back down to earth and they'll unroll out of their ball to begin playing some good ol' Rock n' Rool once again ...

My guess is that these little Tardigrades will inherit the Earth long after us human beings (with feelings) are gone. They'll probably keep the faith and release Reaper v2748.02.639 based on Justin's original code but with lots of wonderful enhancements that only an 8 legged Tardigrade could appreciate.

The price might go up, though ... but then again we don't know what their currency is or how it's valued ....

Anyway, not sure if anyone mentioned but there is the idea of buying it now then finding a way to earn $80 from using it before you get to 7.0 - I think that's more than possible. Much but not all of the gear I own I paid for with that mindset.

It certainly is, in fact it's downright impressive! But when $60 is actually $80 due to exchange rates between two countries, reasonableness makes no difference.

I am guessing that being in a band is working out for you, making an income that way. If so, that's great to hear.

Me, just imagine me "like" a midget knowing his limits and not bothering with trying to be an NBA player.

I don't have stage presence, only stage fright. I would need massive amounts of alcohol and drugs for that. I can't afford that. The idea makes me giggle.

I more meant just using Reaper to pay for Reaper, that doesn't require being on a stage at all and.... At this point in my life gigs are a hobby.

Ooops, sorry, your avatar and band link threw me off. So, how exactly are you generating income from using REAPER?

I suppose one can use REAPER to create songs and sell the songs. That would be my guess.

But that would mean you bought the commercial license. That license is out of range for me. That one is $200+, right? Plus I'm still in the learning mode in terms of writing songs.

Why don't you read the info on official site? Everything is there.

I use a LOT of different currencies & move money around to pay for stuff overseas regularly.
Exchange rates at your friendly local post office or travel agent, maybe would be this bad for cash, but this is not the case for interbank transfers, or even by PayPal who are notoriously expensive.

For instance, the Interbank rate today is one GB pound equals 1.32 us dollars.
If you do that on Pay Pal you will likely see rates of about 3.5% worse.
Means that even using PayPal your cost in real terms would be about 66USD. Hardly $80.

But there again, since OP didnt give a location we dont know what currency he uses or how stable/reliable it is.

I sort of did with the last line from this self-quote.

This shoes smuggler says bye for now. Hahaha.
It would seem a bit cryptic if one had not seen it on the news. But yeah, I'm Canadian.

I don't have PayPal but I think a few people that I know in person may have PayPal. I was going to ask one of them. Also, paying by money order costs an additional 7 and a half bucks in addition to the conversion. These "little" 10 dollars there and 15 dollars there, etc, can pile up very fast if I don't stick to my frugal ways.

I'm glad I don't have PayPal because at the KVR forum I read about many people having Gear Acquirement Syndrome or GAS. I don't want to have the means (PayPal) to end up like some of those people. I don't ever want to be in debt. I have not yet asked anyone personally to use their PayPal to buy things from the net for me but I imagine that they may tolerate me asking them once but not repetitively. So it's a good way to stave off GAS.

After all, you know what Las Vegas do to people.

By the way, how does that work in regards to the REAPER license if someone else buys it for me? How will I prove the license is actually mine since it's my money that payed for it but it's not my name on the bill payment?

Pretty easy, actually - PayPal allows them to buy it for you, giving YOUR email address as the "owner".

Never heard Canadians described as shoe smugglers... I worked with a guy from Akberta and another from Vasncouver & never hear either of themused it over several years of touring bands with them!

From the REAPER web site:

You may use the discounted license if:

You are an individual, and REAPER is only for your personal use, or

You are an individual or business using REAPER commercially, and yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000, or

You are an educational or non-profit organization.
