Default Setting up midi so one channel plays at a time

I'm new to reaper. If I have 2 vst instruments open and one channel is highlighted, I hear both vsts being played when I use my midi keyboard. When I change one midi channel to channel 1 and the next midi channel to channel 2 I can no longer hear anything when highlighting channel 2.

How do I set midi up?

There are lots of ways to set up Midi.

It sounds like you just want to play something on one track's VST instrument, then switch to another track with a different VST instrument?

You just need to arm the track you wish to hear and disarm the track you don't want to hear.

Also make sure you have each instrument set to Input Midi: All Channels.

Thanks. Sometimes I want to use a certain vst instrument but on a few channels so I can play the different presets in the track. Is this still the same midi procedure?

Is that certain VST instrument multitimbral, and/or does it allow you to choose over which MIDI channel it will receive events?
