A lot of modern groove based stuff like Dubstep DnB and so on are a total chore in Reaper unless you are happy to neverending resample in the audio domain, Reapers automation is super basic and only really designed for mixing.
So to do those styles you need to keep resampling snippets and using Reaper like Live, then you have to ask yourself "Why am i using Reaper like Live, just get Live, its better at this" hahahaha

Personally i havent composed a song in Reaper in a very long time, the whole "hmmm maybe i can make a macro to do this missing feature" is great when you are fiddling, but when you are composing, stopping and starting every five minutes because something is missing or just so archaic it kills your vibe (automation lol wtf reaper) is a real passion killer.
just use Reaper for misdown, its what its actually designed for

Done with reaper, not happy with that .

I had to start the song 5 or six times until reaper was able to start the various sequencers in sync (it is all hardware, except the vocal & the string samples.

Ok I'll chime in.

Dance music or electronic music (I'm assuming, as there are other genres of dance that involve only acoustic instruments) in general require a lot of automation and modulation to approach the same level of complexity and expression as found in even basic acoustic instrument music.

For this reason it is important to have tools to speed up this workflow.

REAPER is on par or exceeding expectations for item editing and parameter modulation, however automation lacks tools which I would consider essential and only truly useable if natively implemented.

For example, Cubase has tools for creating line shapes such as parabolas, sine waves, triangles, etc etc in a set number of repetitions and in height and depth, all within one mouse drag stroke with key modifiers. As ambitious as some scripts available here are, they do not come close to that sort of workflow.

It is also a chore to edit the settings of groups of points, without the assistance of cluttered custom toolbars for this purpose.

Lastly, the drawing of points comes with no smoothing options.

Reaper isn't Cubase and Reaper isn't Live.. Reaper is Reaper.

Arguably, Cubase and Live are better for producing EDM.. However, I write Techno tracks and have worked almost exclusively in Reaper since 2008.

Earlier this year I tried to write a track in Live and although it was good at some stuff I had to return to Reaper to progress the track.

I think that i have just become so comfortable with Reaper and have learnt to work around its weaknesses in order to benefit from its pluses.

It's all down to working style I guess.

Same here.

I came from logic 5 for PC and got fed up of all its random bugs.
paying the fruit tax was out of discussion

cubase and live just didn't fit. dunno why. i loved the pattern concept live but at the same time found it to be a pita to actually build a track. and the version i've demoed was buggy as f.
reaper convinced me with its stability and efficiency (number of vsts before cpu maxxing out)

I really don't get the rants regarding lack of automation features and i also do lots of edm with a ton of automation.
There was never one situation where I couldn't do what I wanted to do.
Sure, some things maybe more elegant in other daws (loopable automation items is something i'd really love to have), but nothing is perfect.

Yeah I'm keeping a close eye on it. Might spring for it if it seems worthwhile, though just slaving Renoise to Reaper has been very stable and reliable for me. But, ideally, if Redux turns out to be what I think, having that and Plogue Bidule in Reaper (Bidule reminds me of Logic's "Environment" functionality) will add up to a force to be reckoned with for electronic music styles. The only hang-up for most with Renoise/Redux is the tracker-style sequencer, too arcane for many people, but it's actually quite easy to learn and a lot of fun once you get into sample offsets and other breakbeat-style stuff, it offers quite a different, more flexible way of conceptualizing time signature/beat that has turned out to be very creatively freeing for me. The other killer feature in Renoise with Reaper is the Phrase Editor, couldn't make music without it now I'm so addicted. It really is an excellent companion to Reaper so I hope Redux works out. Buying Reaper, Renoise and Bidule together costs considerably less than Live alone, and I would argue makes for a better, richer, more creative DIY environment for electronic music overall. I like their lack of multi-gb sample/instrument libraries -- you have to do (or at least hunt and download) everything yourself.

I also really dig the groove templates in FLS... found in the Quantize area. Reaper's "humanize" is good but it isn't as focussed as the FLS templates (which, you can always change to suit your needs).

Last, i guess the Midi editor is nice in FLS. Took me a while to appreciate it, but shifting notes a bit (so they don't sound robotic) and adjusting velocity is nice in FLS. All this can be done in Reaper. But I just find that FLS is easier on the eyes or something.
Been feeling a little guilty about this post. I think I wrote it while on a FLS kick. But after getting frustrated with FLS' limitations, I'm back in the Reaper school, for sure.

The only thing about FLS automation I liked better was that it was a bit easier to copy and paste a point value. But everything else... well, there's no comparison. I especially like how easy it is in Reaper to duplicate entire envelopes, copy and past them to any other track you want. I found this a hassle - actually mind boggling - in FLS.

And FLS doesn't have a humanize feature like Reaper.

However, I do like the arpeggiator in FLS. But I can import those files into Reaper... which is home base. It's just way easier to use... for me anyhow.

There... sin expunged..

I came from ableton, which is supposed to be 'made' for 'dance' music. But it couldnt handle time when I threw to much shit at it. Thats a critical fault. Reaper is super solid in that regard.

I would like to know if it has benefited or limited your production in any way and whether it's just as good long term option as any top tier sequencer or do you still have the urge to go back to another sequencer for electronic music?

Hopefully any positive views on this will help me decide whether to cough up for a licence or not.

Also include any links to myspace or something if you got any dance track that has been made in reaper.

Thanks in advance
Yes, electronic music is very much possible.
Shameless promo: http://zedd.amplifiertv.com/channel/sambasevam

I should mention I would ideally like to transition to Cubase because of midi quantize, scoring, version, rendering, pitch correction, etc. but due to the learning curve anytime I need to get some work done I just fire up reaper. Recently after some small reaper customizations I've come to overcome some of its limitations so I might not have to make that switch anytime soon.

And there's always the rock lobster!

I think that song mentions other exotic bum wigglers.

My music has many elements of dance music. I use mainly audio waveforms directly on the timeline but to overcome the lack of immediacy of that kind of workflow programed the relative encoders of a bcr2000 to send midi information on different channels depending on which way i turn the knob. This allows me to map two separate actions on Reaper to control item position/volume/size/pitch. Audio editing with midi control, like it better than piano roll.

Default What I use Reaper for..............

I make music to accompany my pet monkey who pulls me while I sit in a little, red, wooden wagon that squeaks.

[QUOTE=Time Waster;1517335]Using the DAW of your choice (any DAW will do):

Step 1. Add a kick and a snare thus: Doof-Clap-Doof-Clap, at your desired tempo.
Step 2. Add a bassline, one note will do, but up to four different notes may be more interesting, thus: Wub-Wub-Wub-Wub. Use sidechain compression.
Step 3. Add a plinky plonky arpeggio sound. Use plenty of delay.
Step 4. Add wooshy noises. Use filter sweep.
Step 5. Mix.

If you want a more commercial sound, get some chick to sing a few random lines. Repeat it

What a bunch of ignorant CROCK to say!

As long as you have a good knowledge of it's features and you are skilled you can use ANY DAW for dance music - PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

Actually I think Reaper can do a LOT more than Sonar or Garage Band. But feel feel to prove (I NEED PROOF) me wrong!!!

Default YES

95% of what i do in reaper is dance music. Mainly house, but also some chilled stuff. A very famous producer has heard several of my tracks & really likes them praised them for their sound quality as well.

No problems or limitations that i've found ! Before i was using Cubase, which i liked, but when i built a new PC i decided to try Reaper. It's very similat, so it grew on me very quickly.

I have tried Ableton, but i hate the GUI & how it's all laid out etc. Looks like a "This is my first DAW" for kids LOL !
