Default MIDI EDITOR - selecting from track list loses focus - Please fix this behaviour!

Dear Devs,
Could you please take a look at this behaviour?
I reported it already last year (https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=194005) but nothing has changed in newer versions, and i'm not sure it has been officially considered a bug or not.

When editing inside the midi editor it's very handy to use the track list to select a different track, but when doing so the editor loses focus and zoom...why???
It's annoying to be working let's say on bars 5 to 8 in a string quartet and when selecting the tracks in the track list always having to manually go to bar 5 again.

...I found that the only way to prevent it is to have only one long midi item per track instead of different ones, but I don't want to do that and it doesn't make sense

Please! :-)

Thanks and all the best
-t

hello! yes i did! what is happening to you is very boring , i am not sure if it is a bug or some configuration. Maybe someone else can help you! or ask in general forum if you can change this behaviour.

The MIDI editor's zooming behaviour has been discussed (and is still actively being discussed) in many threads. Some users find it very annoying, others (myself included) find it logical or at least usable. (MIDI Editor: Remember last used zoom and stable default zoom.)

Perhaps one of the reasons why the devs have never changed the behaviour or added options, is that the users who find it annoying also seem to disagree on the best solution. (Some points to consider.)

I did nail the exact issue with the zooming and in the case that I explain, it is not at all logical...

It seems pretty simple, people don't want to loose visual focus on what (time) their editing. But i can't explain by technical words. Maybe later. : )

That’s what I mean, I’m not saying the current behaviour is not logical, but at the same time I also consider what I have in mind to be extremely logical as well...here’s an example:
I’m working on bars from 12 ‘till 17 of my strings track...I edit Violins 1 then click on the Violas track to make changes there, and all of a sudden i find myself looking at bar 3 , completely zoomed in, and have to manually go to bar 12 and recreate the zoom level i need.
Then i click on the Cellos track...same thing all over again...

Don’t you agree that what I have in mind would make sense? Do you think it could be implemented?

Thanks a lot for your input!

All the best

The MIDI editor will only zoom-to-fit to a newly activated item if that item is out of view, outside the current viewport.

I think the problem is that there are two (or more) items on the viola track, and you are inadvertently activating the small 1-bar item at measure 3, instead of the larger item at measure 12.

I don't use the "Selection is linked to visibility/editability" options, but AFAIK, when you activate a *track* through selection (rather than by clicking the button), REAPER will activate the first item on that track.

EDIT: Perhaps, when switching tracks, the MIDI editor should always try to activate the item that overlaps the current viewport, rather than the first item on the new track.

EDIT 2: In the meantime, if you switch tracks by clicking the "Target for inserting" button, rather than selecting the track by clicking the track name, it might work better.

i think that is what makes more sense, and friendly in compositional perspective.

@tusitala

This actions help me in the midi editor to achieve what i think you want, maybe you'll find them useful:
Activate next MIDI Track
Activate previous MIDI Track

edit: coff coff, probably in the editor there should be buttons for this actions . I guess many people gets stuck as i did.

i thought a bit more and in fact having midi parts listed in midi editor does not makes any sense to me at all! i would list the tracks and not their midi parts in the right side of the midi editor.

"i just want to switch voice in that time line"

Probably someone makes use of listed midi parts, but i have no idea why! it is just confusion for my brain :/ anyone?

request: option to not list midi parts on the right side of the midi editor?

Many users use multiple items per track. REAPER's entire MIDI architecture is built on items (takes), not tracks.

By default, the track list only displays tracks. You only see the items if you expand the tracks by clicking on the little arrow.

ahh thanks for explaining! : ) still i hate the arrow because it is where i click when i want to change next/previous midi track. As intuitively to me, seems the main button to change. Anyway, the problem is mine. Thanks!

Thanks deeb!

This actually could work as a workaround, I'll give it a try it in the next few days and see how it feels.
Thanks!!!
