I'm about to do mixing /sound design for a video project in REAPER which is currently being edited / cut in Final Cut.
What format should I ask the video editor to export from Final Cut (for seeamless conversion to a Reaper project via AATranslator) ?

OMF ? AAF ? or anything else ? (not sure what Final Cut is able to export to)

You just caught before crashing for the night.
From memory FCP will export an OMF, AAF and an FCP XML so any of those should be fine.
If you have any issues when you get the session PM me directly and I'll hook you up with our latest beta version.

Thanks for the info Runaway.
I'll report how it goes (still takes a bit until picture editing is done it seems).

Have a good night.

Hi runaway,

sorry if this has been already mentioned, but maybe you might consider to contact this guy and extend AAT to support SONAR / Cakewalk by Bandlab projects, at least partially?

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=202667

Thanks,
Mario

I'll try and give him a yell but to be honest from what I can tell he has done an excellent job and I would certainly hate to steal his thunder.

While technically that is possible since ReaCWP can be "standalone" (there is no dependency from any parts of Sonar nor REAPER, it was developed and can be run under bare-bone Linux command line...), there are some problematic points.
ReaCWP is "gray". There was no greed light for its existence from Cakewalk/Gibson/BandLab. As a free independent project for formats conversion developed in Europe, from what I know, there is no legal issues. But I am not sure for the rest of the world and bindings with commercial products.

I fully understand

The reality is that Sonar has not really been a priority for us as we really haven't had enough requests for it and now, given the excellent job you have done, it is even less of a priority and even harder for us to justify the effort.

You have Sonar to Reaper more than covered and until we can justify the effort if someone really wants to go from Sonar to some other format I would recommend they use your product (and hopefully make a donation) to convert to Reaper and then use AATranslator to convert from Reaper.

I don't have a date - I'm notorious for missing them even if I did.
We have crammed so much into this next release that testing is proving challenging
Feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to send you a link to our latest beta which is currently running at v6.3.153

Current beta version is now 6.3.191

It also looks like we might have finally sorted out a particularly painful and elusive ProTools xfade issue as well

Almost famous?

I can't believe it has been this long since I have updated this thread - where has the time gone - oh yeah that's right the zombie apocalypse happened.
Still haven't got a v6.4 release ready but the beta is currently at v6.3.353 and it is jammed packed full of goodies.
Feel free to email me if you feel like living on the edge and updating to the latest beta (which will probably have already ticked over by the time I finish writing).

The best thing to do would be to email me the VIP so I can check it out.
Just note that it is 2:05am here so I may not get back to you for a couple of hours.

I sent it. Don't hurry, it can easily be fixed by using a "reset item pitch" action. but it is kind of dangerous for those who don't recognize.

Thanks fopr bringing this to my attention - it has now been resolved.
It is important that these things are brought to my attention asap so they can be resolved and the best way is via email. That is not to say don't post on forums but don't just rely on me being across all forums in a timely manner ;-)

This also highlights the reason that AATranslator is under ongoing development so that as something changes in a DAW we can respond.

PS I had forgotten to update this thread.

Any new version available in the past six months ?

I‘m simply curious. AAT is working fine here so far.

Alright. But here a feature request: It would be super cool if the created reaper project could be based on the individual default template.

We already have something like that for Reaper - try selecting the "Use This Session File as a template" option.
Maybe not super cool but pretty cool none the less ;-)

Thanks Michael. AA Translator opens in 'demo' mode, is there a license key I should download? Just want to make I'm running into any surprises when I actually need the program.

Thanks!

Got a small issue here.

Windows 10, German. Had a session come in with an "ä" character in the path, not just the session name and AATranslator quit with an "Error 76" Path not found error popup.

Full path: h:\Mix\Haikyuu\Sync_QC\Haikyuu_OVA05_Erzähler_Ret ake_20210920\Haikyuu_OVA05_Erzaehler_Retake_202109 20.ptx

I had already renamed the session, but only after renaming the directory name containing the "ä" character did it work fine.

Perhaps there's a new version available that fixes that already ? I'm on 6.4.00

We are currently up to beta v6.4.43 but unfortunately, this issue is not new and not fixable nor is there a work-around in the current iteration of AAT.
While the underlying software language has supported us for the last 11 or 12 years it is for this reason and many others that we have been feverishly working on AATranslator2 – a complete rewrite of AAT from the ground up in a completely new programming language (a bit like learning left handed Hebrew blindfolded but without the fun bits).

The key things are a new interface, significantly faster execution, smaller footprint and support for network drives and non-English languages and improved Mac support as well as many other improvements and additions.

With over 250,000 (probably much more) lines of code to rewrite and test this is no mean feat and while we still have a long way to go I can tell you that we can now read and write PTX files across network drives with (for example) Japanese filenames referencing media with Japanese names and folders.

So, somewhere down the track there will be the two current versions of AATranslator 1 (standard and extended) as well as the new AATranslator 2 - a version for everyone's needs.

A bit early for an actual announcement but there you go ;-)

Can't say just yet.
Naturally, our main focus is PC but in theory our core development is geared to cater for both platforms which should (in theory) enable a relatively straight-forward transition path and different front-end but don't quote me on that as our resources are currently stretched way beyond our limits.

Agreed, along with the studio you must be flat tack. Sounds like you have help doing the code. Great stuff.

Unfortunately, with lockdowns, etc the studio has been closed pretty much since the start of this zombie apocalypse though we still do editing and mixing. Likewise there has been no live gigs so the production side of things (PA & lighting) has also been quiet. So we have capitalised on the last few months of down time by biting the bullet and doing what I should have done years ago.
As far as the 'team' goes, I have an old mate from the Blue Mountains I have called in to do the front-end and another mate around the corner for any tricky C# bits and a long term acquaintance in the USA (who I have never met) who I call on when I hit a wall and sure enough he comes up with the goods and last but not least I have another long time mate (who I actually met once in the UK) who has been keeping me honest by doing all the testing since day one of AATranslator.
Not so much a team as a hastily cobbled together bunch of crazies who probably keep the streets safe by staying indoors and coding LOL.

Big fan of AATranslator here too - great to hear you've been brewing up something new, and especially excited about the possibility of better Mac compatibility!!!
