It certainly isn't!
I'll see if I can figure out how it got there and how to get rid of it. Thanks.

Nicholas, we've updated the recommendations for video playback and encoding considerably in this post here (thanks to other folks in our community no less, not me):
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=82459
In particular, the current version of VLC, 3.0.8 or higher currently works just fine with v6, so the recommendation of the old v2 VLC in the manual can be updated, as can the recommendation for encoding video.

Thanks airon, this is just too late for the 6.02 update unfortunately, but will make sure it's in the next one.

This isn't the best place to post this question .... you'd be better off starting a new thread, with as much info as possible (eg Win? Mac? 32 bit? 64 bit?).
Check first have you downloaded the correct version for your system?

Unreadable illustrations in User Guide v6.14 print version
I just received a printed copy of the v6.14 user guide from Lulu.
I was disappointed to find that there are many examples (10-20%?) of the user screens that are difficult to impossible to read. Mostly, there is poor contrast, some are light, but mostly dark. Looking at the pdf, they are obviously color. It appears that the black and white printout was not verified for clarity of color illustrations. Or was the printout supposed to be color? (Lulu does say it is black and white.)
I wanted the printed and bound version to be able to read on its own when my computer is not at hand. Now I need to use the pdf to read the printed copy?
Was Lulu supposed to print color?
I have attached a small example. This example is actually easier to read from the photo than from the printed copy.

Reason: clarification of example

I can confirm it is supposed to be black and white, as described. The cost of printing in color would be prohibitive.
Thanks for drawing this to my attention. I think the problem is most likely being caused by the default theme being rather dark, which could make some images difficult to read. I'll work on a solution to this. Rather than discuss it here, let me PM you.
