I'm mixing this Japanerse Punk song...
Hi,
I'd just like to get some ideas from you guys... Maybe you can hear things from your systems that I cannot hear?
These 20 year old kids want to sound like old raw Japanese punk rock bands so I did my best to preserve everything from their performance and of cous no pitch or timing editing.
They didn't give me any extra take to choose and comp. I wanted to thicken the rhythm guitar but since they recorded with no click track, I couldn't really improve it much.
The vocal verse parts is an one take performance. Except for the chorus where he doubled. All the times he broke his pitch is clearly audible, which I loved to death
So this is the first balanced mix I'd like to share with y'all:
https://soundcloud.com/bassmothership/1a-1/s-gFIhH
And this is the Fades up mix where I started from:
https://soundcloud.com/bassmothershi...up-mix/s-IYiJA
What do you think?

Cool.
The bass sounds great, and the kick, but overall it sounds a bit muffled to me. Can you give that snare a little more "spank"? Maybe that will fix itself if you somehow add more high end.
And I think the vocals are a little to loud, floating on top of everything instead being embedded.
But it's a cool song. Thanks

But I still think the main vocal floats too much on top. I would give it more guitar. Some of the kick beats are maybe a bit too loud. And it sounds here like the stereo field leans a little to the left.

First of all, this is a GREAT Punk song! I've been living in Japan for 12 years, and there's very few Punk bands that rock that hard over here. What's the name of the band? Please ask them to come for a show in Hokkaido
Ok, the mixes. I think the second mix is actually great balance wise. The vocals, bass, guitars and drums are pretty much where they should be. The vocals feel a bit "out of the song", however. I think it's a "room" problem. The guitars, bass and drums pretty much sound "in the same room... Probably because they were
I'd create a reverb bus and throw every single track at it. A very short room reverb would do. Then, you adjust how much of everything is getting "wet". The instruments don't need much.. they just need to be there. The vocals would need to be a bit more wet. Like that, everything will sound in the same room, because they will be (well, at least virtually )

I'll second the "great song" sentiments.
Mix is coming up nice, too.

You're very kind. Thank you bros.
Hey Greg, we've been in this island for about same time. Cheers!
The band's name is NOZU. We're in Hamamatsu.
And as for playing in Hokkaido, yeah! I'll ask them.
I've heard the international community in Hokkaido is huge.
Back to the mix, I've been listening from my grotboxes and from my car and everything sounds muddy as hell (cardboard, boxy and ringing everywhere). That makes sense cuz I didn't really use eq at all.
Now i'm cutting a lot of stuff from the guitars and drums.
I really hope I don't kill their sound.
But the nasty stuff is overwhelming. These tracks were really badly recorded.
Anyway, I'll be posting the "cleaned" mix version.

If that's just faders up with no EQ, I wouldn't say it was badly recorded at all.
Be careful not to polish the sounds too much, you could easily ruin the punk vibe by making it sound too nice.

What really stuck out to me were the high hats and cymbals. Too dynamic, too loud and too shrill. I would turn them down, compress them more and for taming the harshness I'd use a dynamic EQ to dip around 6-8k (or maybe you'd prefer a band compressor).
Other minor points, taste things:
The guitar stabs would sound better with more beef and low mids, to me.
The background vocals I would have louder and with more reverb.
Oh, and I don't know if leaving all that amp buzz at the end was intentional?
Good stuff though, and tight band!

I was going to ask, what's your listening environment btw?
I think that trying to comply with the -11LUFS/1True peak for Soundcloud was pointless and ridiculous. I'm a newbie.
Anyway, my listening environment is useless regarding hearing the bottom end but in my car I could "see" how messed/unfocused/blurred the low end has been.
After some work I still wanted to tighten the low end more but I'm settling for this new version. I dont think I can make it sound any better. I run out of know-how.

I started here with this fade-up mix:

This stuff is so difficult.
