Feedback on this metal mix, if you please
https://stash.reaper.fm/oldsb/400554/...20Feb%2012.mp3
This is just a quick demo of some material I'm working on, and I figured it'd be good to get some opinions on how the mix sounds.
Specific points I'd like to hear about include:
- How well do the guitars fit in the mix. It's been a nightmare balancing presence and cut with not drowning out the other instruments.
- How good/bad/ugly is my 100% pitched-down-guitar bass tone?
Cheers.
Edit: Updated the link with a new mix.

Yeah !!!
Hi there
I want more!!! awesome song there! Just please... don't add screaming and yelling vocals to it.
The bass works well but could be a little brighter or more powerful.
The guitar is awesome!

Good stuff. The bass is a bit murky but it works with the other instruments. Mix is good. I like the stereo guitar playoff effect (listened on cans). Like to hear the rest!

Just listened on laptop speakers, no complaints really, i personally prefer a bit more high frequencies on heavy guitars, but i think they sat well together. The bass did seem a little murky, i could hear the string hits but not much else, i couldnt hear anything that gave away it was a pitched down guitar though.
Nice job!

Awesome, good to know it sounds decent on somebody's speakers other than my own.
- For vocals, rest assured there will be no Cookie Monster impressions - just manly-sounding singing, like Hetfield or Barlow.
- I'll keep working on the bass, probably crank up the mids on the amp or something. Personally, I'm just happy to have something fill in the bottom end of the spectrum without sounding like shit.
- The drums are Groove Monkee loops running through one of Independence Free's basic kits, with an extra kick sample from Andy Sneap's forum. Independence has pretty good rock kits, but they need a bit of love to get a metal sound.

I like that bass tone, nice and round!
How exactly did you do the shifting?

Great heavy guitar sounds.Bass sounds fine.In this genre I don't know how much having a real bass would improve it as a lot of the bottom end is taken care of by the guitars so just keep tweaking what you have.
If there's heavy compression on the drums try putting the hi-hats and cymbals on a separate track so they don't get affected. That will allow them to cut through without the,"Crushed" effect that compression can have on them.

Too be quite honest I think you should maybe leave the bass the way it is.

ReaPitch with -9db or so of the dry mixed in, and then three or four amp and pedal sims to get a lot of beef and a good "clicky" sound on the pick attack. I can post the chain if you want.

Very nice. Reminds me a bit of Prong or newer Exodus... good stuff.

I like the "bass", too. I used to do that a lot before I had an actual bass. Just record my clean, or slightly over-driven guitar and pitch-shift it down an octave. Works pretty good.

I don't know enough about how to produce this kind of music to actually give any advice, but I do know that I like it - a lot!

OIlers or Flames?
Personally I'd like to hear the drums louder and bring the guits down a tad. Also there seemes to be some weird phase problems on the guits that I'm hearing over headphones.Nobody else noticed it so it must be me!
Great playing. Really enjoyed it!

Flames, but I lost interest when I was probably six.
Phase issues... hmm. I'll have to tinker.

Sorry to be late to the party but that tune ROCKS!
Can you share some secrets as what plug-ins you used for mastering?

You'd have to be a bit more specific if you want a useful answer. If by "mastering" you mean what's on the master bus, it's just Tessla saturator and Kjaerhus' Classic Master Limiter. Any specific areas/instruments you were thinking of?

Hi Lokasenna,
good tune there,
I'd say, like valem, that I can't find that there is anything wrong with the "bass". Didn't quite get what Henge meant by criticising the phase problems (listening over phones as well) although at the end - yes, listening again, I think there is something weird going on with the rhythm guitars. When they play in unison you can't hear, out of which direction they come. And yes, the drums could be a bit louder. And also the guitar in the centre could be a bit more prominent IMO. You could even try to give it a decent chorus, to let it stay in the centre, but at the same time take it out of the head (if you're listening with phones).

Good suggestion, but there isn't actually any guitar in the center. It's two tracks panned hard left and right, each with a second cabinet sim panned to the opposite. But I agree, the single-guitar bits in the last riff don't pop out as much as they should.

Voila:
I'll mention that, while I can definitely hear a DIFFERENCE with Tessla running, I can't decided whether or not I like it better. Guess my ears just aren't well-trained enough to understand what the difference I'm hearing is.

Loka,
right after the intro I hear a guitar playing alone kind of a theme, beginning with b, b-flat, g, g-flat...
This is the guitar I meant. And even at the beginning of the piece I'd put it (just a bit) more upfront and less "mono".
But overall it sounds quite round to me.

great demo man !
just sounds a bit muddy.
you can try widen yo guitars a bit.
that should help clearing your sound image.
anyway the instruments's performence are sick ! Did you played that ?

Yeah my opinion was the same.. drums kind of disappear a bit too much. Dial the guitar back a bit, or at least make some room for the drums. It sounds like the rhythm guitar part might have some bass in it which can be carved out. Hard panning left/right might help too, if not done already. I'm listening on some headphones that aren't anything special though, so I can't be certain about the guitar having too much bass (could just be my mediocre headphones), but the drums need to be brought out though.
Edit: actually, I see you DID hard pan the rhythm guitar. May just need to make space for the drums somewhere and/or some parallel compression / distortion on the drums. I'm thinking though dialing back the rhythm guitar a bit and giving that volume to the drum part will go a fair ways on its own though.
P.S. G'Oil.
