Default [FIXED] Wrong time signature denominator-to-tempo relationship

This is Music 101 here.

Reaper fails to recognize that in 2/2 time signature, the HALF NOTE takes the declared BPM tempo, NOT the quarter note.

This is an extremely basic feature of all Western music that is missing in Reaper. It makes production much more difficult for scoring, for example, not to mention interfacing with existing music projects coming from other DAWs which handle time signatures correctly.

Compound time signatures such as 6/8 and 12/8 are in 2 and 4 respectively, 99% of the time. This should be Reaper's default.

In addition to fixing this clear musical software bug, an FR could be allowing user-defined beat arrangements such as 9/8 being in 3+3+3 or 2+2+2+3 etc.

Yes to all of this +1000 I can't believe it's not here considering it's soooo basic, if someone uses something other than 4/4 it's probably a hassle

RIP prog guys

Many (probably most) DAWs exclusively use quarter notes for bpm. It has advantages, such as making tempo comparisons easier.

REAPER does allow other beat bases, such as 1/8 or 1/4dotted (selectable in a dropdown in the Edit tempo/timesig dialog window). However, half notes are not yet possible. Perhaps submit a Feature Request, rather than a bug report?

Thank you for your input. I would like to make an FR, but I don't see this dropdown. My tempo/timesig dialog just has two text inputs at "Set time signature". Entering 2/2 there does not select half note for the tempo denominator.

Interesting detail: in notation mode, the correct tempo is displayed at the start with half note taking a tempo half that defined in the project BPM setting

Oops, it seems that this feature is currently still only available in the pre-release dev versions. The good news is that 1/2 notes are now also available as a beat basis.

Julian, where is this option? I can't see it in the edit tempo / timesig window....

Underneath "Position", "Set tempo" and "Set time signature", there should be a "BPM basis" dropdown.

(I'm not sure if this feature is available in the release versions yet.)

Ah thanks matey. No I've only got "set metronome pattern" under those two.

Wow - if this feature is coming in a release that would be amazin!

It's something I struggled with in Cubase for 17 years! and the devs just couldn't see the problem at all.....
