Default Is Volume Change Within Time Selection Possible Without Manually Splitting The Track?

Hi all, I work with vocal tracks and I sometimes have to change the volume of just one word at a time. With a new recorded track the volume line is in the middle of the track and is set to 0.00 In order to change the volume of a time selection I have to split the track before and after the word so as the volume outside of the selection is unchanged. Then I can drag the volume line up or down as needed within that time selection.

Is there a way to change the mouse behaviour or the preferences so that when I make a time selection, it automatically splits the track at the start and the end of the selection, and allows me change the volume within that time selection, without affecting the whole track? Is there a macro for that so it can be turned on or off?

Thank you for your help.

You might be interested in the action
Envelope: Insert 4 envelope points at time selection
(if you want to work with the volume envelope)
or
Item: Split items at time selection
if you prefer working with item volume

Whichever, assigning one of these to a shortcut might be a timesaver.

"Actions" are accessible via the "Actions" menu.

Isn't it default behaviour that left-click dragging an envelope inside a time selection adds square points to the edges?

Set your modifier for mouse dragging a time selection, then you can drag that out and then drag the envelope.

You might find the pre-fx volume envelope more helpful, as the waveform display will change according to your gain changes, and it will work the same as item volume as you've been using in terms of signal flow.

Thanks all. The answer turned out to be "Ctrl + Shift" inside a time selection. That adds the 4 points and lets me adjust volume. Thanks for all the help.

Ah yes, that'll do it. Glad you figured it out.
