Default Video - Reaper uses VLC. Why does the video playback is not as smooth as in VLC?

Hi,

Question is pretty much in the subject.

I am wondering why the video in REAPER is not playing back as smoothly as in VLC.
I am mostly dealing with mp4 files, h264 codecs.

It happens to me a lot that the video window is stuck in a frame in REAPER.
Jumping from one point to another in the video is much smoother and fluid in VLC than in REAPER for me.

- Reaperx64 with VLCx64 on Win7x64
- Intel Xeon E5640@2.67GHz (2 processors)
- 24GB of RAM
- NVidia GeForce GTX970

Any idea?

Thanks in advance guys!

Same issue with FFmpeg decoder here. I guess it has to do with keyframe handling/seeking. In Media Player Classic Homecinema there's an option for it: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=153816

I've had this issue forever in Reaper. Makes scoring to video impossible. I wish this got some attention but, I won't go down that road for fear of scolding.

I have VLC, MPC, and I can't get either to be smooth in Reaper like they are standalone.

Why?
I know how to compile ffmpeg and no tricks are working here.

If anyone does not have this issue I would really appreciate to know what their config is.

Mail your issue to support@cockos.com.
The Reaper devs are very helpful.

Compressed video needs to be decoded. Highly compressed formats (e.g., mp4) have keyframes and if you're not seeking directly to a keyframe, you have to seek the previous one and decode everything after it. So it also depends on _how_ the video was compressed.

Try uncompressed video so Reaper doesn't have to deal with it on top of everything else it's already doing.

In video production, video is often resized down for some tasks to make editing more seamless, then the actual video is brought in for rendering. Could do the same in Reaper re: scoring.

I have tried uncompressed video formats like pro res, avid dnx hd etc... It's definitely not a codec issue..

Thank you but this really doesn't help me. Can you share your video configuration in the preferences pane ? Are you on a Mac ?

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=196930

Check that link. I have attached some screen shots which show my computer config, codecs I have installed, reaper version..etc..

Sorry, I was replying to the original poster's question. Didn't realize it was an old thread that had been updated
