Default Race To The Bottom - Grunge/Alt. Rock Song

Hi all,

Working on a new song idea. Vocals and performance is not perfect but feedback is most welcome:

https://soundcloud.com/jonathan-lint...-to-the-bottom

RACE TO THE BOTTOM
(Words by Jonathan Linton, Music by Jonathan Linton)

You’re cold, but you’re sweating
Your mind, ain’t forgetting
Your new primal need
For poison feed

Once more, you resolve
To fix a problem, you can’t solve
Shuttin’ out those that can
Soon feedin’ time again

Temporary hiding place
From the truth, that you can’t face

You’re in a race
A race to the bottom
Race
A race to the bottom

Regret, your decision
Dead set, indecision
Each crash sucks you in
To poison sin

Pitstop for you to feed
Obsessive need for speed
It’s a race, of attrition
And you got, pole position
Temporary hiding place
From the truth, that you can’t face

You’re in a race
A race to the bottom
Race
A race to the bottom

SOLO

Race
A race to the bottom
Race
A race to the bottom

A race to the bottom
A race to the bottom
A race to the bottom
A race to the bottom

Well played and recorded, but seems a little heavy on the guitar side and not enough drums and bass. Not sure how to explain it. Vocals come thru nicely.

Thanks for the feedback! Did the car test and I agree. I think the guitar tone is too scooped and should be a more high gain Marshall/Friedman tone a-la Alice In Chains. I think I will retrack the guitars and even try layering guitars to hell like Alice In Chains to make it full but back off the volume (they reputably layered 15 guitar tracks on one song once!). Lets see...

I would totally jam this while driving, windows down, 106db of of red light mayhem.

I'll check back to hear your remix for sure. I agree that a little AiC treatment would sound awesome on that song.

Peace and Good Happiness Stuff

I do agree with Soundchaser but overall just some kick-ass hard grunge-ish tune!

cheers

I totally dig the song. The guitars and vocals are a little tight and could potentially drag timewise to give it a little more swag. I agree the RhGtrs are too loud and make sure the bass and guitar are mixing to make a crushing tone.

great song! some really good energy.. Agree with previous comments about pulling up bass/drums... would add a ton of energy and make this complete!

Like the compression you're applying..

Great input all! I had to leave for an appointment after I finished the vocal tracking so I literally make a 2 minute mix and let it rip. I will definitely work on the drum and bass levels and try some guitar retracking or EQing.

Glad you like the song! Stay tuned for more...

Cool song!

I agree about the guitars, they need more midrange grind to sound more grunge and less metal. I think the rhythm guitars would have more impact with the gain dialled back a bit too, or if you're going to track more guitars then have them less distorted and with more mids to blend with the guitars you already have.

Agree with others that the drums need to be louder. It will get more energy in the track. I'd speed up the outdo a bit too, to get more of a sense of urgency.

Vocals seem a bit loud in the verses, I'd tuck them in a bit.

Fixing little bits in the mix is easy though. The hard part is writing a cool song in the first place, and you nailed that!
