I would prefer it has a mode too, .. and so while in this mode i would not be worried with anything else other then area selection stuff, and when i want other stuff i would quit the mode

As the notorious user who made the feature request for "Please Natively Implement Sexan's Area51 and Track Versions/Playlists", I want to strongly echo this. It is really a fantastic implementation that all users would greatly benefit from.
I said it in the feature request and I'll say it here. Sexan put in so much work that he really created the road map for this. And the right one IMHO. Ghost copy is most definitely part of what I would consider the "right" road map and much more intuitive.
Oh and here's the great thing. The devs can take a look at the code to see exactly how Sexan implemented it. As well as just reach out to him as I'm sure he would be more than happy to help.

That sounds overly complicated to me.
Although it would be nice (and a separate feature) to allow all the mouse modifiers to change (or toggle) between different "modes".
But I would consider this to be an advanced feature that most people don't need.
In thinking about this, there's nothing stopping someone from creating a custom action that changes every single mouse modifier with one keyboard shortcut. And changing it back with another.

And additionally this is a feature that would really set REAPER apart from any other DAW.

How is this possible now? i don't know a way to change mouse modifier other than the default modifier. How could i change the modifier i have assigned to Alt or Ctrl left drag?
That's why i mentioned before a way to load whole mousemap contexts with a script.

It's actually i think the most standard way and also easier and clear. This is not really advanced if the user now it's existance.
Switch button in Main tool bar, to toggle between the 2 modes: selection mode (classic) and area selection, would really easy to see and know about it. And also the modifiers more logical and standard. Example:
in Area Selection mode:
-- left drag creates area
-- shift + left drag adds to selection
It's my opionion tho.

bug: when duplicating (CMD +D) and then undoing .. envelopes area selection borders disappear, unlike track borders.

Kenny no problem at all, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@Stevie
I downloaded Reaper Reworked, can you please point me where to find the script that could load mousemaps?

One of the scripts is the one behind the pencil icon in the main toolbar.

As long as it can be customized, I don't think what is default is really an issue. Just give us the modifiers we need (left click/drag) etc. and we'll set it up however we want. Problem solved. If the devs really do have bigger fish to fry let's just take that one off the table and let the user decide themselves "default" behavior with how they set up the mouse modifiers.

... but in perspective, I agree sane defaults for first installations (newbies) could go a long way towards establishing friendliness. People who have been users before should have saved their personal files, so I suppose it's going to be easy enough to restore modifiers determined by ingrained workflow habits.

What I was trying to say is that we can mentally take it off the table for now.

I'm confused. Couldn't we always right click drag to select items in arrange view? What exactly is new here?

I would love to have this because i could save different mousemaps for left click/drag relative to what i need. For example if i want to use area selection, i could make a custom action with this script loaded with the mousemaps i want for AS e.g for media item and track-left click/drag and any combination with keys.
Then make a toolbar button for AS with the mousemaps that we saved and use it as a tool similar to other daws, where each time you select a different tool, automatically changes the mouse actions relative to that tool. And in Reaper there's no way to change the modifiers of a context without a toggle state, so a script that could load modifiers for contexts would be really cool to have.
|
Hey that sounds like a slightly more elaborate tool picker from Protools 3 .
For now, I'm interested in having the area selection creation methods available in more contexts, i.e. media item, media item bottom half, thus not just the arrange view. Some folks just want to set this up right away. They'll put the time selection and time+item selection methods on other modifiers.
Selection's a bitch and a half.

Nope, it's not about that. Go to youtube and check videos about area selection.

This post from Ferropop should help you understand why area selection is a big deal. Basically everything inside the selection box gets selected in a way that is not possible using time selection.

Check mouse modifiers for arrange view. And it works only in dev builds.
