Default mixer-tracks in theme-6 and 7: width!

In order to maintain the overview in the mixer the width of
the mixer-tracks is crucial: If the width is too big you will
have to scroll horizontally like mad. So it is important to
have a well set track-width.

---------------------------------------------------------------

For me the best track-width in theme-version 5 is "ba small".
Here I have a quite good overview and I seldom have to scroll
horizontally:

More infos about mixer management here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

With the new theme-version 6 the situation changed:
Suddenly the track-width is considerable big and the mixer
overview is lost:

Note: If you have 40 or 50 tracks beside each other with
this width you have to scroll most of the time!

The smart users have found out that you can change the
mixer to a "narrow state". You can do this for instance in the
"theme adjuster". But if you choose the "narrow state" all
the faders mutate to knobs - and again: The fader-status
overview gets lost.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Question: How can we regain our mixer-overview?
---------------------------------------------------------------

Luckily we have a solution. Reaper user "Intrastellar" suggested
to just edit the "rtconfig.txt" of the Default_6.0.ReaperThemeZip.
More infos here. Thanks to "Intrastellar"!

And indeed - if you scale the width to "70" then the width of
the theme-6 tracks is the same as in "theme-5 ba small":

And you can go even further: If you choose "56" the tracks
look very clean and you get a perfect overview:

If you really want to focus on mixing - and if you want to have a good
sound - then I suggest to choose this setting: No knobs can disturb the
look and you can concentrate on driving the faders only.

I was able to get this down to 52 pxels wide using a smaller fader

Probably best to use 54 to match the actual Narrow layout

the question though, is what about the Mute, Solo and Recarm buttons?
you have no way to see if they are active or not and no way to change the state if you want to.
Or are you suggesting the user scans the TCP for that?

based on that alone , I don't see this as good solution.
a new layout needs to be made or the user will encounter other issues that break work flow.

Thank your for showing the 52-pixel version!

Of course, it depends on your workflow.

I find it appropriate to do Mute, Solo and Rec-arm in the TCP. The new
theme-6 makes sure that these buttons are always visible in the TCP.

While the TCP focuses arrangement you will mute, solo and record exactly
here.

In contrary to the arrangement the MCP has its key aspect on mixing, which
is setting the right volumes, sends and inserts.

Yes, a standard-theme solution would be better. It should at least
maintain the overview which the older theme-5 once allowed (see the first
picture above).

Hi guys,

Just found this thread in the forum search - this is something I've been trying to do lately too!

After about 3 hours of trial-and-error editing of the rtconfig last night, I was able to get it down to 55 pixels. I removed arm, env, phase and anything to do with inputs, as I tend to only click on those things on the TCP. It ended up looking like this:

I need to find a way of getting the routing button back in, and also my pans are only showing when the height is increased by quite a bit:

I'm struggling with the WALTER code for stretching vertically, which is very clever and far beyond my understanding. Ideally, I'd like to extend the dark grey background behind the FX button downwards, and move the Mute and Solo buttons into that space, above the pan sliders.

Can any clever themers give me some idea of how to achieve that without breaking anything?

Oh, and the other thing I managed to break along the way was the right edge of the coloured folder border. Which is a real shame, since the border around folders is one of my favourite elements of the V6 theme

Any tips on fixing this would be greatly appreciated!

imo, if layout C in the default 6 theme had a damn fader instead of a wonky knob, all would be golden.

You'll have to edit the WALTER Macros to change that behaviour.

not without breaking something, but...
you'll need to edit the mcp_bg.png and mcp_bgsel.png images to extend the dark background area.

you'll need to edit the meter_bg_mcp.png and resize it by removing some of the non-active area on the right side of the image.

Thank you! That was just what I needed. It was actually mcp_volbg.png and mcp_vol_label.png that I needed to change in the end, but you put me on the right track

I've shuffled the elements around so that mute/solo/io are directly below the FX button, and the vertical stretching doesn't appear to have broken too much. Wasn't able to extend the FX background without borking everything, so I just removed transparency from the other buttons instead (not a fan of M and S taking on the custom track colour).

Also realigned the meter and volume fader (with smaller cap), and I'm pretty happy with it. The pan sliders still look a bit janky, so I might tweak them further.

Forgot how addictive this Walter stuff was once you dig into it!

Default Reaper 7 theme: Track view mcp too wide

---- version 7 problem ----

Now we have the same problem with the new default theme for
version 7: The solution of "Intrastellar" here doesn't work anymore.

Now we can reduce the track width in the new theme adjuster. But
if we do that, the track view suddenly splits, and the fader distance
and level display are extremely shortened - to the point of being
unusable.

What can we do?

This is the exact reason I use the Peace_Mod theme that is updated and maintained. I'm a huge fan of the small mixer layout complete with faders and access to all controls.

I tried user Vidalsh's suggestion. He discovered that
"mcpFormW" is the parameter in the "rtconfig" that has
to be changed. And - tataaaa (!) - it worked!

So yes, we can reduce the width of the mixer slots in Reaper
version 7 and the default theme for version 7 so that we get a nice,
actually usual, overview of the mixer tracks.

And it goes like this:

1. Take the "rtconfig" and change

"set mcpFormW * Scale [52 88]"
to "set mcpFormW * Scale [52 72]"

2. Call the "theme-adjuster", go to the mcp-section and change
the parameter "MCP Width" from 88 to 75. Do this for "when
unselected", "when selected" and "when armed".

That's it.
