"Another" new theme - need input :)
Hey hey, I was messing with a theme I've been tinkering with today. It's like a mash up between Logic, Pro Tools 8 and OSX style.........so it's grey basically I like the inserts, fx params and sends how they are now..............but all the buttons are a bit naff.
They're pretty much just black text, and not properly aligned yet.
Any button-style suggestions? Bearing in mind that I've made the mcp backgrounds a few pixels narrower........so the buttons also have to work narrow.
Here is a screencast of the mixer atm, and here are a couple pics of the new vs old style buttons (the mouse cursor didn't hide properly in Jing - it looks better when it hides). I'm thinking that the black strip style kinda works, so if I made them a dark grey rather than pure black it might fit in nicely. Thoughts?
current buttons (yuck):

old style buttons:

Bear in mind I'm going for simplicity for this theme. I don't like loads of colours all over the place. That's why I changed the fx params and sends. I don't really care about reading the dB level of the sends all the time, if I want to know I'll read the tooltips.
Vol and pan sliders stolen from Rado (hope that's ok Nick, they're nice...........and maybe rec_arm as well, I'm not sure..........I'm a thief )
aaaaanyway
ideas?
cheers

mmm yes
Although I do need to adjust the contrast. They're toooo dark. And widen the vu a little......there has to be even spacing between the edge and the vu call me Mr OCD.........it's tricky to be picky when theming.....I wish there were lines in the rtconfig.txt to shift the UI elements up, down, left or right by pixels.
Something like
+ : up
- : down
< : left
> : right
for example:
mcp_mute_on:+1<2
or something

I was thinking about doing another theme based on the old Tascam Portastudios, but if you go with the old school buttons I'll just end up using your theme instead!
Can't wait to see it finished.

Yeah, the old style buttons are awesome, especially on the side of the mixer strip. Now you have a clean, uniform, defined area for everything instead of an indefinite, misshapen mess of letters and symbols. I also like the thin meters, too bad the peak displays don't fit. If we had the options in the visual simplification FR to get rid of the peak displays and use fills instead of faders this would be just tops. But it's looking very nice even without it.
Edit. I don't think the old style buttons are too dark, I think they look just fine the way they are. They are just enough lighter than the background to delineate them, without making it busy. But I'm all for the experimentation if you think so.

Well I'll try, but I'm back off to uni in a couple days so I won't have much time for a while! I use it as is atm, and it's not utterly offensive...........just kind of "huhh?' in a few places
and I've not touched the MIDI editor, and probably won't.....sorry
But when it gets to the point of stash upload, anyone who downloads should feel free to run rampage and modify whatever, so it's all cool.
The other thing is, it's being made on OSX and is turning out quite OSX-ish in many places. I've tried using it in Win7 boot-camped on my laptop, and it looks strange :/ but that may just be because Win7 looks strange on my laptop, I'm not sure. The screen contrast and colour saturation is always kind of whacky.
I'll probably upload a couple versions, one of them having send "meters", because they can actually be useful to glance at occasionally.
Another theme FR would be the addition of a "switch to x_theme" action for every theme that's detected. That way, one would be able to create menu items that changed specific UI elements depending on the situation. The next/previous action only works if you make really specific macros and then never add or remove themes.
hmm, wine brings out the feature requests in me

yes. that kind of thing really bothers me
Also, if we had the option to adjust the width of the mixer strip area per theme (in the rtconfig.txt file) that would also help!
/////////
am I the only one who always reads "misshapen" as "miss" "hapen" internally? My inner monologue doesn't have particularly good reading skills .

Due to my crazy levels on non-free-time over the next impending infinity.
Any theme-ers in here feel like a collaboration?
I could upload it now, and then people could add/remove/modify/mess with anything they wish, and then re-up to start the cycle again?
A coalition for dark-ish, visually simple-ish, utilitarian>eye-candy kind of theme.......if you will
only ground rules would be, if you don't like it already, don't take part......those who do like it, just don't change it tooooo much

This is very nice dude!
I really like the old style buttons you had happening. Infact... I was wondering if you could post you theme with the old style buttons?! I REALLY like it and would love to steal some elements from it if you don't mind?

But of course. Here are both versions. The mixer buttons are now the same in both versions btw, the old one is the more complete of the two.

Which font did you use on the "m" "s" text on Mute and Solo buttons?

hmm I can't remember :P
For the simple text-buttons I'm pretty sure it was Lucida Grande semi-bold, but for the dark buttons I have not a clue, sorry!

I'll try when I have some time to tinker with the theme. I'll need to anyway as I want to change some of the buttons, so I'll need to know as well

Still thinking of revisiting this? I'm pretty happy with my stripped theme now for most occasions, but this really seems like it has the potential to be a nice "professional" (if that word hasn't lost all meaning) looking theme up there with a lot of other DAW's defaults; I'm curious to see how it could evolve.

O no problem, good luck with that. I just finished last year, I know how it can be, but I didn't even have to do a dissertation. I ended up calculating what I needed on all my finals to pass the classes and doing only that my last semester. In one of my classes I turned in a three page paper for a twelve page assignment; there wasn't even a conclusion.
