Default Midi Notes Hanging Up VSTi Synths

Does anyone have problems with Reaper locking or hanging VSTi synths when editing midi or in general? Even if I stop and start at times I'll get a midi note lock on a patch.

I have a big problem when using the UVI Workstation and/or Falcon in Reaper.

I'm experiencing midi notes hanging when editing and they won't release until I reload the patches.

Here's a vid I put together showing what's going on. I sent it to UVI's tech support as well.

https://app.box.com/s/if3pncr387jawm0m8dne992f5caowdf5

The first "Hung" or Midi Note Lock (MNL) is at 35 secs in. The 2nd MNL is at 1:23. The 3rd MNL is at 5:52 using a Flute Pad.

I then switch to the OB-X patch named "Kathedral" and at 3:56 I had a MNL while adjusting the midi note as you will see.

I then tried to see if it happened in other libs so I loaded KROMA (not shown in the video) to see if it would lock up and it did as well, just like it did with Synth Anthology II.

I contacted UVI Tech Support and they said it seems to be a Reaper issue.

Is this something that is being looked into?

Thanks!

Are you sure you HAVE to reload the patch? Did you try pressing the stop button in Falcon/UVIW, that sends all notes off internally?

Also, I'd suggest to disable previewing MIDI on velocity change, as it can be a bit erratic. You can always just click a note after a velocity change to preview it, and that is a LOT safer than having a stream of dozens of notes during velocity changes (there is a case to be made that a preview note when velocity is changed should only happen after the mouse button has been RELEASED, though - that would result in a much thinner stream of notes)...

I'd use keyboard shortcuts to change velocity of selected notes rather than mouse editing, usually. No way I ever got a hang that way.

Haven't tried the stop button. Is it the one on the top right (like 1 o'clock)
that has "Tap, Tempo, Sync, AutoPlay, Stop, and Play"

I'll have to try that next.

I use keyboard shortcuts as well to change velocity and get the hangs, but I will test again.

Hey EvilDragon

Here's a vid I did trying the "Stop/Start" button in Falcon.

As you can see it took 3 times to stop/start to get it to stop hangin.

Faster just to reload the patch.

Do you have Synth Anthlogy II or Vintage Vault?

Perhaps it has something to do with those libs.

Nope... I have Vintage Legends demo with a few patches.

From what I can tell here, I would say you need to construct a sure-fire way to produce hangs. I see you trying way too hard to get a hang in that video, but it's not clear WHEN it actually happens. It might be related with how you're trying to tweak velocity very fast right after a transport stop, or is it during a note playback, but it's not entirely clear...

How do you have Reaper's options for MIDI reset set up in Properties->Audio->MIDI Devices and Playback?

As far as trying "Way too hard to hang" I captured that video after it just "hanged" on it's own. I was editing for like 15 minutes when it hung so I recorded it for you and others to see.

as far as "When" it actually happens it could happen at any time like... if I go back and hit start at a different section of the track, it could hang. Now MAYBE if I let everything stop for like (I don't know) 3 seconds and then edit, then MAYBE it wouldn't but it happens at odd times so I'll try to keep an eye out for that and stop and wait a few secs before playback.

Many times it happens after I fully stop the track... wait, then edit a random midi note and it locks up. It's really odd.

Not sure. How do I get there to check? I looked under Reaper Preferences and Project settings but couldn't find Properties.

Tips?

Thanks!

Cool! I have "Restrict MIDI hardware output to one thread" checked.

Next I have:

All Notes Off (checked)
Pitch/sustain (checked)
Reset on: PLAY (checked)
Stop/stop seek (not checked)

Reset on play: uncheck, on stop: check. Try now.

Reset on play doesn't make a lot of sense IMHO... That's what might have been triggering the hangs. At least I would hope so.

Just tried this and still get the hang on the notes. They seem to happen more easily if I adjust a midi note while the note is still fading from the release.

Probably happens less if I wait till the note totally releases. However, I believe I have tried shorting the release to stop immediately and then I still had a hanging problem (hmmm).

At first I thought it had something to do with the patch and the release time. I even mentioned it to UVI Tech Support but then discovered it wasn't the release causing it.

I'll play around with it some more and check the release time again when I get back in the studio tomorrow.

I get no hangs ever under any circumstances I work with. So why not mention those circumstances with sure-fire ways to reproduce them? Otherwise you're not helping.

I also get hung notes with zebra 2 and zeta+. Its unfortunate because i cant find any kind of pattern so you guys could reproduce it sometimes it totally ruins the experience of writing music. Happens in almost every project.

Whats interesting is that i noticed it happens more often when im also using cthulu (midi arp). Not helpful i know ed

Vintage Legends comes with Vintage Vault which I have.

What patches do you have? Perhaps you could send me a demo project with Vintage Legends loaded into Falcon and I can see if I can get it to hang here.

I've also set up Reaper as discounted above per Evil Ds advice.

What do you think Evil D? Will this work after what we have just tried?

You can always try it and let us know. I have no hang issues here so no particular need to test it...

Ah, ok. It can be the synth issue.
