Dea-Man, it's more a question of how to frame what the commands do.
This is stuff that's useful to people using automation more often.
A simple example is to do write-back-to-first-touched-control for effect send levels. You roll playback a bit before the area you're interested in. You TOUCH the control (in Latch mode you just need to change it slightly to do that so non-touch controls work fine) , find the right send level, and hit the command. Then you just roll transport up to the point you want that level written.
No need to edit anything by hand. That's the goal. That's what gets you the speed. Direct access. This is what makes Harrison consoles, ProtoolsHD+Icon/S5/S6 controllers and Nuendo+Nuage so good to use.
These actions give you some of that access. It's up to you how to control your stuff, but writing it has just become a lot easier and faster.
Is there an option to write to the beginning of the project as well?
Is there an option to write to the beginning of the project as well?
Yes. And to the end of the project.
Before, we had writing all activated on all tracks that had a writing mode active. Start, end, time selection.
Now we also have write to all latched(or rather currently touched/being written to), start, end, time selection and back to punch in(Reaper calls it first touched).

That actually sounds very exciting and useful. I would love to see it in action. A picture worth a thousand words and all...........

I loaded reaper to my pc, found a free midi file and tried playing it. All the controls showed that there should be audio going out, but i could not get any thing coming out the speakers. I tried changing all the options. I have a lap top with windows 7. Is there something else i need to run reaper.

Yeah - you need to plug in some VST instruments into your FX. Just having midi notes won't play back anything.
Reaper comes with hundreds of effects, but not VST instruments.
I tried to find some tutorials on what I was trying to achieve the last couple of days - recording midi for a drum machine, first the beat (kick+snare) on track 1, then the hats on track 2, which is on another track below, and so on, committing new overdubs to new discrete tracks. Pretty basic stuff.
...
It would be a really informative video for you to make (imho), if you could make one based around these two tutorials I mentioned, but include the ability to create new tracks and record to them as you go. It's not so simple at all. One has to change the monitoring options, the input options, all kinds of things to go beyond one physical track.
I'm talking about -
Track - 1: Kick and Snare (midi)
Track - 2: Hats (midi)
Track - 3: new stuff etc..
Here's a link to a thread where I describe it in more detail, if you are interested:
I've managed to make a template up to do what I want, but it took me about six hours to work it out. That is some kind of learning curve!
...
Just a suggestion as I think your style is perfect (talking to Kenny here obviously) for this.
Anyway, excellent videos, well presented. Reaper is a program probably more than any other that could benefit from reading/watching some instructional material first off. The more the better! First to see what it is capable of. Secondly to show how to do it.
Thanks again.
If you do a video showing 'what it is', 'what it does' (drum midi magic, with the discrete track stuff), I'll do a video guide on how to set it up...
PM if interested
(I agree with your suggestion, and have 'added it to the list', and would love to see those templates
Trim Envelope, and using it like the trim mode in Protools (doesn't have to be the title )
The all important action is:
Track: Swap volume envelope and trim envelope
That's the trim mode, without having to have a trim mode. The downside is that you have no visual indicator that you did this.
This enables some cool things, like trimming the entire volume envelope by an amount you set the fader to, with a little help of some actions.
Set Latch, swap volume/trim envelope, hit play, ride fader, find value, hit "write actively-writing to entire envelope", stop, swap trim/volume, apply trim to volume.
Those last four could be a custom action.
Also, combining envelopes that could together hit the upper deck on envelope resolution is a non-problem. The values are fine. It's just that the envelope display cannot show them, and the fader will basically screw those bits if you touch it at those spots.
So the trim envelope doubles as an extension of the limit, even when recombining the two envelopes.
I'm mixing a show next week where I intend to use these actions plenty. Gotta practice those shortcuts .

Yes please.
I missed this, didn't realise this existed at first and was bemoaning the lack of arming and fader control of the trim envelope. I put a shortcut on this and the coalesce actions as soon as I needed to use them, but a user toolbutton bar might also be a good workflow.
Also, another idea would be step note input in notation view, along with setup of user toolbuttons needed.
TBH, any notation videos would be welcome as it's a big feature-set for some users to absorb by written manual alone.

Same here. After the trim envelope was first introduced I thought "Yeah nice, but almost useless to me." I completely missed the introduction of the envelope swapping action.
It's pretty seamless too. If you're riding in Latch mode and swap during playback, the old envelope is matched out and no longer written to. Works quite well.
The bummer is the visual indication which is incidental at most.

Most piano roll actions also work in notation view. Including step entry mode.
You'll know what I mean here though ED, the Sibelius input methods, clicking the note or rest length, has anyone duplicated it on REAPER yet? -I'll take a look at Epic's blog and videos.
Keys or buttons for the notes plus up/down a semitone/octave would be cool too, if you're entering without a MIDI keyboard.
when i m rendering my sample they are not exporting in perfect bars even i edited them in perfect bars before exporting ,i cant understood what kind of problem is that loop is over length not perfect on bar grid please help me as soon as posibble
I just wanted to add my thanks to Kenny and Cockos for making these videos available for free. The v4 one's were totally worth the money, and getting the v5 ones right here is nothing short of awesome. Thanks guys!
Kenny,
Thanks so much for these excellent videos! I moved over from Protools over the last 2 weeks, and as a result of learning REAPER from your tutorials, I've been able to be productive almost from the get go.
I wasted a few days griping about differences in workflow, then came to my senses and decided to abandon my preconceived notions about how REAPER ought to be and watched every lesson over a 2 days span. I've been working on a friend's Christmas project, and I haven't been stumped yet.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Reaper.
You will discover many things in Reaper, that will let you wondering even more
why on earth you ever used NoTools :0)

Cant remember if I already said thank you in another post (gettin' old!), so will repeat it here, thanks Kenny for the great tutorials, I am picking up speed with Reaper much more quickly thanks to your efforts.

Kenny, I would like to say I love your videos. They are really valuable, each one of them.
Still, I have a request ;-)
Can you please make a video about how to setup Reamote, since I know a lot of Reaper users (including me) are struggling with this, and it's one of the best overlooked features of Reaper.
With every new release/ update of Reaper, the Reamote app has been updated as well, so it seems it's a important feature which is still worked on by Cockos at every release.
Still, there's no official tutorial/ video spend on this networking feature.
The existing video's circulating on YouTube are very very rare about this topic, maybe because most users find it too difficult to setup or maybe Reamote (especially for Mac) is still too beta-ish to spend a well explained video on this topic.
Please help us users explain the following:
1. Reamote setup from Mac OSX (as Master) to a second Mac (as slave).
2. Reamote setup from Mac OSX (as master) to a PC (as slave).
Maybe the other way around (from pc to pc) as well for all pc users.
I would be very thankful if you can spend the time to make a step by step video about the Reamote network feature.
It might take some amount of time to make Reamote work properly, but I am almost certain the whole community would be very thankful.
Thanks in advance, Kenny!

Sit back...relax...(you'll be at your destination 3 hours late)
With the above average amount of air travel I've had as part of my job for the last 21 years, the issue with late flight take-offs & cancellations has become the rule instead of the exception.
Between that and the cramped quarters in coach where the meal tray is about the size of a Chiclet, it's satisfying to be able to take out my iPad and listen to the soothing sights & sounds of Kenny Gioia's tutorials through noise cancelling headphones.
I also have a laptop computer but it is often too large to pull out when packed in with the other sardines. The iPad is perfect.
I even occasionally will get noticed by a fellow Reaper user who recognizes it in the videos.
All that aside, thank you Kenny!! The insanity that is airline travel gets tedious and your videos more than make up the lapse in my mental health coverage that isn't covered by Obamacare. I have watched all of the videos enough times that when I sit down at my workstation, most everything I need to do is second nature.

What's up everyone, I just downloaded Reaper yesterday after using FL Studio on and off since Fruity Loops 3. During the last couple of years, I’ve gotten back in to producing music as my hobby and in that time, I have bought some MIDI interfaces for a richer experience.
My goal is to learn Reaper from the ground up. I’ve started by watching the Kenny Gioia’s tutorials. Kenny, if you happen to read this; your high level knowledge and incorporation of different techniques to access the same functions within the software is what other DAW tutorials have been missing. I love your in-depth explanations and at the end of each lesson, I jump right on to the next step because you leave me wanting more.
I can’t wait to learn more of this amazing DAW. The customization, extensions and additional plugins Reaper provides is crazy. As each day goes by in the 60-day evaluation period, I’ve decided to put away $1 and buy the license because I’d be stupid not to!
If anyone out there has other outside of what the tutorials provide, I’ll be more than happy to take whatever pointers and advise for noobs you have. Please feel free to send your knowledge my way. I look forward to becoming a part of the Reaper community!
