REAPER CONTEST - OCTOBER 2017 (RESULTS)
__________________________________________________
Hey guys, the boss here Sorry for the little delay but uni is giving me time issues managing this contest lately
Anyway! This month the song is called A Place For Us by Carlos Gonzalez. This song is very challenging because it has a lot of tracks and vocals stacked on each other. It might be a bit tricky if you've never mixed a song with a fairly high track count, so I suggest you taking your time and gain stage all the media items properly to avoid mid-sessions crisis
That's all for now! For any questions, you can write here on the forum, send me an email (go on the website), send me a message on Facebook or even join the brand new Reaper Contest community on Facebook!
See you later lads

Hey All.
Having fun with this song... wasn't sure about it at first...
Can anybody suggest reference track bands for this genre?
Don't give away your secret sauce But I don't have much knowledge in recent pop sounds. I'm leaning to 2010ish pop.
Well.. any ways.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Just a quick note. When you are ready to submit your entry, PLEASE, send a me a single zip file renamed YOUR-NAME (e.g. FERGLER.zip), not all the separate files. Thanks
If everyone sent me separate files instead of a zip, it would be a huge mess. It already happened a few times that I got multiple submissions on a very short amount of time and I had to find out who uploaded what for like 10 or more files.

Weird, I've received many zip files over the months. Have you tried using another browser?

Submitting now...
I found this month's mix needed less work than last month's. Better recordings (esp. the drums) mostly, I think. I suspect that the 'raw' tracks had already had some dynamics processing on them as well - I only added a few compressors here and there (and nothing extreme) to get a good balance, to my ears at least :-)
I also used the 'Pink Noise' technique to set up an initial volume balance which worked quite well (only took 25 mins for 60 odd tracks) *except* for the vocal tracks (particularly the main vocal) which were far too quiet

I just discovered this and would like to participate. Am I correct that the download should just be a folder full of .flac's (with no .rpp)? So we are to create our own Reaper project, to which we import the flac's, for submission? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something, heh.

I sent you a zip of my first attempt at this sort of thing, let me know if you got it.
Sorry I named the zip file something other than my name, didn't see that until after I'd sent it.

I have had Reaper for almost a year now. But I didn't know about this. I spend so much time mixing my band it would be fun to mix something else!
This would help getting to know Reaper plugs. How do I find the next mix song? I am really excited about this!

I have used Pink to balance Left and Right on the mains. But I have a feeling you are talking something else. Could you share what you are doing?

Likely running pinknoise at some predefined RMS level, then muting all tracks and bringing them in one-by-one until you can just barely hear it against the pink noise background, remute, move to the next track, rinse/repeat. It's not bad, has it's advantages for the very first basic balance - I don't use it much but have from time to time.
TBH, one can probably achieve a very similar result by setting the initial balance at an excruciatingly low SPL since misbalances pretty much always show up there too.

Dave has designed the contest so that all the projects can be downloaded and run on a standard reaper install, using native plugins and, occasionally, impulse files for reverb, etc. If you've not participated in the contest you'd need to download the source FLAC files too :-)
