I would say to leave the poll open from today (29th of July) to the next Friday (5th of August). Then if there are more people who voted yes then we can decide the rest of the competition.
P.S. The reason I said only Reaplugs and JS is that everyone starts from the same point. Not all of us have fancy plugins

Only Reaper plugins doesn't work for me If I want to mix. I use at least waves NLS inside Reaper.

I use rarely the reaper plugins so you wouldn't be the only one who had to change his habits just a bit. If you want to challenge yourself and maybe reevaluate the reaplugs , you're welcome

Leave it open to any plugins anything goes. Then when a mix using only Reaper plugins beats the mix using UAD/Waves/$$$ stuff, you'll get to read some fun comments.

Then think it as a challenge on who can produce the best mix using only the reaper plugins! Aren't you curious about what could come out? I am because I use 99% of the time 3rd party plugins haha

Slightly true lol only difference is you have 100 different types of white noise. I'll be honest here, I'm not good enough at mixing to enter any kind of contest. But this still sounds fun.

Do it as challenge for yourself then! I've been mixing things at home only for a bit more than a year! There are no prizes and I don't know if there'll be judges at the moment.

Then it turns into a "let's do this with one hand ties behind our backs" kind of thing instead on someone approaching it doing their best with no limitations.
Don't read that as me stating my opinion on plugins.
There's certain to be an entry using only Reaper plugins that beats someones "throw the bank at it" approach to shake things up. Could be a positive thing for someone who watched too many youtube "tutorials" and is thinking "If only I could afford this plugin, my mixes would suddenly be so much better."

So everyone should install portable version to check what plugin is included? A lot of js plugins aren't bundled with Reaper, but you can download them from stash or other sites.

well, to check what you have then simply go to your fx browser. When you install reaper you can tick the options to install the js plugins.

But that's the point! If we don't use the same plugins then there is no contest

I would argue it would be a more pure contest!
You said a "mix contest" right?
Not a "Reaper plugin use" contest.
So...
Use a wire recorder and a screwdriver if you want.
I do see your point and that could be just as easily argued the other way. Just a thought.

That's not what I wrote I said "a mixing contest open to all Reaper users using only reaplugs and js plugins". More clear than that... If you don't wanna do it simply don't, you don't have to

I'm in.. if the song is good that is.
I'm sure we can all make very good mixes using only Reaplugs and JS plugins.
The only real problem i see is reverbs. Would have to use external impulse with Reaverberate or something.

I think you need to lay out more specifically what you mean. For example:
Do you mean that everybody gets the same song go mix? That would allow for fair comparisons, but not everybody is equally at home with a particular style of music or its post production requirements.
Or do you mean everybody supplies their own recordings to mix? In this case, it would be difficult in places to distinguish between qualities in the musicianship, the recording and the mixing ... and you'd need to be able to compare apples with oranges (e.g. classical music with rock with hip hop etc).
Sorry to sound negative, but these are examples of issues that need to be ironed out from the start.

Two suggestions:
1. Use Reaper or free plugins - still a level playing field, which I think is very important.
2. Entrants must post their rpp files. Otherwise the whole exercise is pretty useless from a learning perspective. In fact, don't even think of this as a contest, we should all be here to learn from each other.
And I agree we should all use the same song, or at most a choice of two.

Yes the song has to be the same. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.
The purpose of using the same plugins is also that we wouldn't have any problems sharing our reaper sessions.
I would still call this a contest AND a challenge. A challenge for trying to use only the reaper plugins and trying to get the best out of them. A contest because MAYBE if next week there will be more "yes" than I'd like to get in touch with someone who could judge (still don't know who).

Yes. The whole point of this contest/challenge is to SHARE our reaper projects. For that to happen we need to have to same material and tools

For reverbs you were right, we should use the same impulses. But I would prefer discussing all these details next week!

Which indicates that it's not about the plugins. Which I know you already know
I kind of see the point but also don't see the point in only using certain plugins. All plugins are highly capable - it's down to you and your skill at the end of the day.

This idea was born in the Italian forum almost one year ago. Sadly, me first - the opener, nobody had the time to actually do it.
I will be glad if it could be an international "contest", though it's not actually a contest because there is no prize but it's more a sharing skills and mixing ideas each one of us has.
you can find the original topic here:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=167109
if you can read italian.
The original idea was:
- one song choosen by all with a poll
- only reaper plugins (and JS of course)
- you can use free samples or impulse if you want to use them but you have to share them
- no loudness war, it has to be -16dB LUFS
at the end it has to be delivered:
- reaper project file
- all the samples used
- a text files with all the notes about the project. As it has to be a sharing skills and ideas it would be nice if people could know what you done in your workflow
I have to run for a job now, I will be glad to help you with this even if I don't think a have too much time to be part of the contest...but who knows
