Default Free VST recommendations for beginner

Hello! I know this is ground floor stuff, but hoping to find a few simple coordinates to work from. I'm a songwriter and completely new to using recording software. Reaper seems so much better and easier than my first go at Abelton, but in acclimating to the process I'm hoping to get a handful of good free VST's to begin experimenting with. I have gotten MT Power Drumkit and also the TAL Noisemaker. In searching for good instrument plugins, i've honestly been overwhelmed by the options and no had no clue as to how to discern which ones to try. I'd like to have something with a wide variety of instruments/samples and I was also hoping to get another drum beat VST that has electronic drum/beat groove loops. Anyway, I was thinking that someone may be able to name a few really good, free plugins that I can start with as I'm trying to learn the whole process. Thanks!

For synths the usual suspects are Synth1 and Dexed. Both have thousands of presets available online. And many people also recommend Charlatan. I never got on with that but it's probably just me.

I don't know about "drum beat VST" because for anything other than MT Power I normally use drum samples in either ReaSamplomatic or TX16Wx.

It's worth having a look at https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=52382 and https://bedroomproducersblog.com/201...-plugins-2017/ but unfortunately they both have so many recommendations that it may just add to the confusion.

For bread and butter instrument sounds, try out the Proteus VX plugin. It's free and I'm pretty sure it's just the old versions of the Proteus libraries. http://www.creative.com/emu/proteusvx/

A really great synth for learning how to make synthy sounds is Hybrid 3. It is still $1 for another week or so at https://www.pluginboutique.com/produ.../1545-Hybrid-3. That's less than a bottle of water!

Thanks for your quick response and good feedback. This is great stuff for a starting point. I trust those of you who have been doing this for a long time much more than me initially trying to pluck options out of the massive piles of plugins. I appreciate it and I'll check all these out.
