Matching audio and MIDI - how would you go about this?
Ok, so here is my situation. I have MIDI tracks as accompaniment for a classical piece I am working on. This includes drums, bass. The MIDI is set to constant tempo. Now, here is the thing. Although the guitar part is pretty much straight 8th notes throughout, I tend to speed up and slow down depending on drama/energy that I wish to add or take away. So there might be 4 bars where I am playing evenly, then a bar where I am gradually speeding up or slowing down. So the ultimate question then is: How to record a very human performance of a classical piece, and adjust the tempo track to follow?
That's pretty easy. Just use tempo markers to adjust the project tempo to your audio file. Then the midi follows automatically (because its synced of course).
If you don't know how to achieve this ...
Or just take a look at Youtube in search for reaper tempo mapping etc.
The easy short tutorial would look like this:
-> Import your audio file
-> Change the time base to "Time" (right click on media item ->item settings)
-> Now start placing tempo markers at the beats of the time line
-> finally strg-click and drag the markers to the corresponding beats in your audio record (count the beats and strg place the markers at right spot)
