Default Monosynth madness

I guess you'd call this country electronica? Dunno. I know I wanted a country twang in there somewhere when I came up with this, but even being born and raised in Georgia, I don't have a heavy southern accent. So I called on a country buddy to sing the chorus parts for me.

Mark Staab: chorus vocals (but both of us at the end)
Me: Lead vocs + acoustic guitar + hillbilly lead + Uhe's Tyrell + Zebralette

Cowboy Tom Buckles Down That Hatch
Sam Dixon 2018

Time to hang that saddle up
It's too slow for this ride
But I'll keep my holster on
I like it by my side

Guess I'll hea d to Jesse's bar
and have myself a seat
Pearly Mae sits two stools down
Still the local leech

And like that cowboy on the radio
I've been shot up and been shot down
Better light another smoke
Time to find myself another town

Got this two-bit rocket ship
But I ain't got no fuel
Spoke to Reverend Massey Joe
And he told me what to do

He said, "Son get on that big tin can,
And buckle down the hatch"
Guess I'll say my goodbye now
Cause I ain't comin' back

And like that cowboy on the radio
Following that railroad trail
Better light myself another smoke
Time to take this thing to outer space...

Now hand me down my cane, boy
Glad you stayed to hear
Way too far past midnight
in this stratosphere

I won't be here tomorrow
Found another path
don't you feel no sorrow
when I buckle down that hatch

Kinda cool, but there was too much echo/reverb in the vocals.
It kinda ruined the song for me.
But you know me regarding vocals

IMO the way the vocals are mixed fit the saloon @ Cape Canaveral mood of the piece.

Thanks guys. And yeah, like Z said, that was a purposeful choice--this time. I don't think nice normal vox would have fit.

I almost always listen thru head phones.

Listened thru the monitors and it sounded better.
In head phones the vocals sounded less distinct and it was some kind of woobling effect.

Sounds like it comes from a Firefly episode. Cool, ... very different.

I wish more actual country artists would experiment more with modern sounds.

That's the second show I've heard mentioned. The first was AMC's The Preacher. Thx man.

Preacher - yes, great show! I think the music on that show is a bit more N'Awlins style, but with a modern edge.

Hey Mr.Sam

Too much verb on the vox. Id like to hear em up more front, And maybe distort them a bit

Love the lyrics, they are so far back that its hard to tell what they are

Great vibe man

I live in a tv vacuum. I've never seen either of those shows, but at least I'd heard of Firefly. When I googled The Preacher, it seemed weird enough that I might actually like it.

Not at all a big fan of verb, but I did use copious delay. That's two to mention the vocal fx. I love it, but what good is that if others feel the vocals aren't clear? Guess this is not so 'final.' Thanks Luke.

Stranger of strangers. Where've you been?

I ran my guitar thru Audiority's Tube Modulator and dialed in a tremelo-ish tone. I really like that plugin for modulated fx. It's got a little beef to it.
Thanks and hope all is well.

Hey Sam, I'm doing alright. I've been struggling with music lately, but things have brightened up. I reach those plateaus where I get stuck and stop developing, and that usually takes some time to get over, thinking things through and all that. I often obsess over sound and detail and whatnot.

Like always, listening closely to my sound gave me a direction and something to work on. Now I would like to do an album, with just me and an acoustic, mono, no overdubs, just the pure thing. Folksongs, whatever.

Maybe I can cover this one?

I would LOVE to hear that. And believe it or not, stark with just me and my acoustic is exactly how this began. I just couldn't leave well enough alone.

I saw a Joy Electric video called Mono Synth by accident and really liked that song for some reason. I mean REALLY liked it. So I listened to more of their stuff, but this was about the only one that appealed to me. Still, I was dying to try it on something and this song was all I had written, so...

Yes Stan Ridgeway did Mexican Radio with Wall of Voodoo. A lot of his music has an other worldly feel. I would say the same about this track.

Mexican Radio is the only thing I've heard by Ridgeway/VooDoo (as far as I know), and I never liked it. But sounds like he may be more interesting than I thought. Gonna go to YT to check out some of his/their stuff.

Added stripped down version and updated version to OP. I tried to find a compromise between keeping some of the vocal fx, yet toning it down, that and a few other tweaks.

This is a really cool song Sammy. The stripped down version really holds its own and that proves that the core of the song itself is solid. Definite "ear bug" quality to this which is an unusual thing for me these days. I really like the strummed guitar sound in the choruses.

PS. Pearly Mae doesn't appreciate being labeled as a leach when Sadie Mae clearly holds that distinction.

Reaper Project:

Marks vocals are really bad (by request). So just so you know he can really sing, we did this together a while back. I wrote and played the music (and samples), he wrote the words AND melody. I just do background harms vocally. Lo-fi on purpose.
