Default Track midi stops sending when start recording

(apologies if dupe post - looked a bit.. and my first post.)

DAW: Reaper 5.961
Korg Minilogue
FocusRite 2i4
TR-8s
OS: High Sierra

Wiring: USB -> FocusRite MIDI OUT-> IN TR-8S OUT -> IN Korg

All MIDI notes are in Reaper, it is the sequencer ATM.

Problem: MIDI+audio track - midi stops being sent as soon as I hit record. Having separate tracks (one for midi, another for audio) works, but I really wanted the 'one track for midi+audio' to work. I spent prolly 4 hours dinking with it, then wanted to get back to fun, made separate tracks and got back to creative fun.

Everything sounds great, all ready - hit record and my sound flatlines. I thought it was audio not recording, but if I play notes on the Minilogue or TR-8s, sound shows up and is recorded. so really seems the MIDI stops being sent. Things work fine in Ableton, so rules out drivers and such. I am really hoping my noobness clicked something I don't understand, else for now separate tracks unblocked me.

Attempts so far:
Wiring: USB -> FocusRite MIDI OUT-> IN Minilogue OUT -> IN TR-8s (nope)
Wiring: USB -> FocusRite MIDI OUT-> IN Korg (nope)

thanks

Have you turned on record monitoring?
