Default freezing tracks ?

Hi Guys I have been trying to figure out how to freeze tracks in reaper . There are lots of explanations on here but after reading a whole heap of them I am even more confused than ever . Can some one please explain or show more how to do this in lay man terms . I know they are lots of reaper pros here, full respect to you guys , A noob like me these tech jargon are way out of league.

Probably this might be a dumb question but what is a macro?

This is the closest thing I could find on it. Hope this helps. This comes from the Reaper User Guide which is available on the Cockos website. There may be other ways to do this that I don't know about. I'm sure others will share, if so. J

5.13Stem Rendering
Stem Rendering is a technique that can be applied to ease your CPU load if it becomes (or is in danger of becoming) overstressed. The item is rendered to a new track, whilst the original track remains but is automatically muted and the FX bin is bypassed.

This offers you the convenience that if you later wish to change the FX in a stem rendered track, you can delete the rendered track, unmute the original, and make your changes. This is how it works:

1.In the Track Control Panel area, right-click over the track number.

2.From the menu, choose Render selected tracks to stem tracks (and mute originals) or (to render an existing stereo track as mono) Render selected tracks to mono stem tracks (and mute originals)

Stem rendering has a similar effect to a process known in some other DAW software as freezing tracks.

To freeze a track right-click on it and choose render to stem, there are two choices depending on the type of material you are rendering (mono, or otherwise)
Macros are sets of instructions you programme Reaper with (using Actions), and usually assign to a keypress. For instance here's one for freezing a track and offlining the plugin(s) rather than just bypassing them (to free up memory)
Item: Select all items in track
Item: Apply track FX to items
Track: Set all FX offline for selected tracks
Track: Toggle FX bypass for selected tracks

The last instruction gives a visual indication on the track that its FX don't work. You could improve this macro by having the track mute.

A macro is a set of actions that a user can put in an order
for software to execute automatically. Exmaple:

1/ Stem render selected tracks
2/ Go to next track (select the one that had VSTs and is now muted)
3/ Set ALL FX offline for selected track(s)

name this macro "freeze", put it in the menu or bind a keyboard
shortcut key to it, and any time you click that key or menu item
this user set of actions will be executed, saving you some time
and mouse clicks.

It has to be said that stem rendering only mutes the original
track, which (1) prevents the track from outputing any audio
signal, (2) unloads the CPU use if the preference process
muted tracks
is disabled, but (3) does not unload original
plug-ins from RAM.

That is why user must manually right click the plugin's and
choose OFFLINE selected plug-ins, to fully unload resource use.

I have made two Python scripts to simulate basic freeze and unfreeze in Reaper. They're in this link:

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=57367

Installing and using Python scripts is very easy, and you only have to learn this step once, if it seems complicated at first sight. These scripts work well for me and I use them in a regular basis in my projects, so you could give them a try. The advantage is not having to mess with another track, you save CPU in the track itself and can edit volume and pan without having to recall settings later. There's more explanation in the link itself.

Hope it helps.
