A very expensive niche market in these hard economic times

Why no Linux option? Surely there's a ton of people using it for music work...

Also all the Windows 7 options don't really make any significant difference for audio work.

XP Pro 32, at the moment. It was a choice over Vista. Didn't consider Linux, but that was my oversight.. not a conscious decision.
No reason to use Mac, IMHO.
I use them, work on them, and own a bunch of older ones (ranging from a Mac SE30 to a dual G5 tower) but can't see that spending the money on a new one would offer any advantage, for our purposes, over the XP I'm using.

I'd rather upgrade to/build a new windows/Linux machine for a fraction of what a new Mac would cost. And, perhaps, go 64 bit if I was sure things were stable, etc. (I can't make use of the added available memory on the laptop I'm using for the music at the moment.. it's maxed at 4GB)

Just my $.02

Agreed, the Windows 7 options could be condensed into Windows 7 32bit and 64 bit seeing as that makes a difference when installing software and drivers. Mac on the other hand has done a 360 on this. It used to be said in favor of simplicity that there was 1 OS for mac - OSX. Now I go to some download pages and I find a rather alarming array of download options with serious implications for getting it wrong.

10.4
10.5
10.6
10.7
ppc
x86
32bit
64bit

Mix and match.

DOS 6.2 (Not 6.22) - Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm a Mac man (10.6), but I would quite like a Win7 machine ... I don't know which version, not sure of the diffs, but I like it.

Vista 32 bit. Not exactly my operating system of choice for audio, it just happened to be on my PC.

Believe it or not, it runs without any problems

Yep... my dinky little netbook has Win 7 Starter Edition. Freaking AWESOME little machine coupled with Reaper and a Tascam US-122L.

Imo and ime, I value the ability to get and keep a workhorse computer up and running with a minimum of research and f***ing around quite highly. Let's not continue this age-old boring argument about the validity of subjective choices

dates from a different time and it's not reflecting the situation between OS's that are on the martket now.
