Default [v5.65pre17/x64] Metronome Issues: Primary/Secondary Beat Gain

Reaper v5.65pre17/x64
Windows 10 Pro x64

Hello,
  1. New Reaper project in 4/4 time signature; start playback
  2. Select Options > Metronome/pre-roll settings...
  3. Enable the metronome (default pattern of 'ABBB')
  4. Set both Primary and Secondary beat levels to the same value (eg -6.25dB)
    • Bug #1: the primary beat is louder than the secondary (primary is -6.25dB, secondary is -12.5dB); they should both have identical levels
  5. Reduce the Primary beat's level to -inf
    • Bug #2: both primary and secondary beats are silenced; only the primary beat should be silenced and the user should still hear the metronome clicks on the secondary beats of 2, 3 and 4

Also, slight naming inconsistency: under the same Metronome Settings, the first slider reads "Primary beat volume", whereas the other reads "Secondary beat gain" (both should use the term 'gain')

The manual (v 5.60d, page 58) reads:
"Primary beat volume: This determines how loud is the metronome volume.
Secondary beat gain: The amount by which the volume of secondary beats will be adjusted."

Surely the primary beat volume should "determine how loud the primary beat is."

Hope this helps

Not a bug. The primary beat volume is the overall metronome volume. The secondary beat gain is the gain of the secondary beat, relative to the primary beat volume.

The first setting makes the metronome louder or quieter. The second setting makes the secondary beat louder or quieter, relative to the primary.

I'm sorry but this doesn't make sense. Why then name it "primary beat volume" when it could be labelled "overall metronome volume"?

Naming it "primary beat volume" makes the user associate that slider with whatever is marked with the letter 'A' in the metronome pattern.

I see both points here but I have to say, what arhythmetic mentions does make sense.
Perhaps it would be better to have primary and secondary volume sliders and an overall volume slider too (although the latter could be done with the metronome channel fader).
Sometimes it is useful to be able to make the primary beat softer than the secondary ones.

Then, the secondary colume should have positive values too (dont know if thats currently possible). It's much better to have the relative values instead of absolute ones. I don't see any advantage in 2 separate absolute volumes abmnd an overall volume in addition. In which situation would you need that over a relative solution?

I like the current way of managing beat volume, but yes I agree for new users the wording is completely un-understandable / wrong

Should be "Metronome volume" and "Secondary beat relative volume"
