Default Buffering Questions

I have an AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 8core @ 3.2Ghz
16GB RAM
OS and Reaper sitting on an NVMe drive
Project files sitting on SSD
Roland Rubix 44 USB interface

I have a 60 track session (a lot of them doing nothing) and a good amount of plugins going. Everything works fine with my USB Streaming Buffers set to 3 getting 10ms latency. Higher buffers/latency is not useable for recording.

In this scenario CPU running about 15%; Memory at 50%.

If I had something like Ozone9 on Arturia Pigments in the mix, which are intensive plugins, then I start getting popping and crackling.

CPU running about 20%; Memory at 50%

If I increase my USB Streaming buffers the crackling and popping goes away - but the latency is not workable if I'm trying to record as well. Flip/flopping my buffers for recording vs mixing would be annoying too.

1. I'm curious what limitation is causing the crackling? My computer cpu/memory resources are not taxed at all. How can I maintain low latency in my current workflow?

2. Are there other settings I can adjust to increase performance with more intensive plugins?

3. Are there any scripts add-ons that would add a button to the tool bar for toggling your buffer settings between two setting; to save digging into menus?

Thanks in advance for anything you can offer.

where are you viewng your cpu usage?
In Reaper's performance meter you need to right click and enable RT CPU - this is the value you should look at.
processing audio in real time is the critical thing - how fast your machine can transfer audio from it's buffers etc. It doesn't matter how many cores you have etc
I'm probably not explaining this well - this question gets asked a lot so someone else will probably chime in with a better answer (& maybe a link to a video that sums it up nicely - can't remember who it's by though)

I now understand better the processing and Realtime processing. I'm still wondering how to increase my real-time processing capability - other than adjusting the USB streaming buffers.

if anyone has any tips on where to focus my efforts, that would be appreciated.

i'm not sure there is an easy fix. trying a different interface or changing PC components might help, but i think the easiest solution is probably to get in to the habit of rendering / freezing intensive tracks and to avoid using any mastering plugins during the recording process.
