I'm a proud new license holder!
Hello. I just laid down my $50 for Reaper and a better purchase I've not made in a good while. A recent "upgrade" to C@#%W^%#HS7 left me with an empty feeling so I started trying out Reaper. It's so so awesome that you can download the entire program, fully functional, and try it out with no restrictions. Being able to try it out right next to HS7 really made the sale. Initially, Reaper seemed kinda clunky looking and some of the features seemed difficult to use (like the VST window) but with a little time and study I've discovered that Reaper is flexible almost to a fault. Everything that I had found lacking in HS7 I eventually found in Reaper, usually to a greater degree of functionality than had been in the earlier, more versatile, HS6.
There are still some things I need to investigate, like how to keep a tracks FX window from closing when I click on the track in mixer view (to adjust a fader, for instance), but I have a feeling there will be a way to do this - that's been my experience so far.
Anyway, I don't mean to sound all drink the kool-aid, and I'm sure I'll still use HS7 sometimes, but Reaper is a steal. Buy it.

Hey, Thanks for the Welcomes and the links. I will definitely be paying for the user guide which I have downloaded. It's 400 some-odd pages!!!!
Home Studio is Cakewalk's "light" version of Sonar, at least it was until version 7 came out. I think version 6 got so close to the full on Sonar that they decided to pretty it up and dumb it down to attract a different user and keep Sonar as the high end (expensive)product.
But again, I don't really mean to bash Cakewalk. HS7 is a really good program - they did make some basic improvements so that in some ways it works better than HS6 - Unfortunately they also took away a bunch of versatility.
Reaper seems to have versatility in spades as well as solid performance. I'm looking forward to getting to know it better.

happy
You wont regret it. As a previous CW##$=*&SON&#$AR user I have been VERY happy with REAPER. Not to get too OT, but I have noticed a lot of "changes" at CW over the years - and not in a good way.
