Default Are Reaper's VU meters odd?

I notice that if I decrease a track's level by 1 dB according to the little popup window, the fader moves down by about 10; huh? So if my level starts at 0 dB and I decrease it to -1 the slider moves from the initial -12- position on the ladder all the way down to between -18- and -24-. Is this a bug? Is it a feature whose advantage I simply haven't grasped?

You would never believe what newbies are capable of.
So there is a mystical force that moves your slider, right?
Are you sure you haven't been dealing with the Volume slider Automation at some point?
If yes I must admit that I do not understand the problem's description you've written above.

The numbers near the faders belong to the meters and NOT to the fader. Fader do not have numbers. You can see the actual value of the fader above it.

It sounds like you may have adjusted either the trim automation for the post fader volume or the pre automation for volume. we've all been there!

I haven't done any automation of volume at all. I did do some panning automation as well as some FX automation, but so far I have not tried to do any serious level mixing with Reaper and used its automation features for that. Frankly, I'm dreading it.

Good to know that the slider and the meter are not directly related; I think that probably answers my question. But that kind of begs the question, doesn't it - since the idea of using a slider is to change the volume, and the idea of the meter is to monitor the level, why aren't they directly related? My 32 channel Mackie's output level LED ladder certainly agrees with the markings on the level sliders, for instance.

You can make the numbers related to the faders by tweaking the range of them and the range/shape of the meters in preferences -> VU Meters/Faders.

But it's kind of tricky and quite often not useful...
