Default Problems on Debian (Sarge)

Hi.

OSS works fine (but we hates OSS, yes we do.) But ALSA;
Code:
JesuSonic v0.98 - Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Cockos Incorporated
Using output mode: 'ALSA'
Opening ALSA 'hw:0,0' for read
Error setting periods.
Try -nbufs 2 through -nbufs 16
-nbufs 2 through 16 makes no difference. A large number of paramater permutations also don't help. I have two soundcards, and get the same error with both. I'm not using a stock kernel, if that makes a difference.

Brilliant piece of software, btw.

Try -bufsize 1024, and other sizes, too.. Also, what kernel version, and what ALSA version?

-bufsize with various exponents of 2 doesn't seem to help. Self-compiled kernel 2.6.8 (with Debian patchset.) ALSA 1.0.4 (I think.) I'll try stock kernels / 2.4.22 later today.

edit: if relevant, soundcards are a SoundBlaster Live, and an ESS ES1938 (Solo-1)

Same problem with self-compiled 2.4.22 (ALSA 0.9.6).
Debian stock kernel 2.6.8 (2.6.8-2-686 to be precise) works with the ESS ES1938, but gives the same error for the SB Live. Will post if anything else becomes apparent.
