Any network gurus know how to setup router for wifi hotspot?

Hello, I am not very network savvy, but I want to setup a router in my studio...but while still keeping internet connection. I am using a USB dongle/adapter (my daw doesn't have built in wifi) and am connecting to a local Xfinity hotspot wirelessly (its my xfinity account).

However, as soon as I plug in the router I lose the connection to the wifi. So that's one issue I'm having.

The other workaround that I can't get to work, is how to connect the router to the hotspot, which would mean I don't need the dongle adapter. I am not sure if my router will even allow that. Asus RT-N56U.

I would really like to have both wifi through the hotspot and a local wireless network so I can setup tablets for remotes and osc.

Any help is appreciated.

If I'm understanding your setup correctly, you need a reverse hotspot, connecting to the existing wireless network and supplying internet to the DAW PC via ethernet?

Ha, I'm not quite sure what have/need or what a reverse hotspot is. The "existing" wireless is actually the xfinity hotspot (via usb dongle) but there is not "network". Only the daw can connect to it via windows wireless. I can login with a tablet to the hotspot, but they are not on a network as it is now....and I want a wireless network I can connect other devices to.

I'm not 100% sure I understand correctly either but if you are using an xfinity/dongle for internet access, there isn't a place to include a router. The closest I can think of is to enable internet sharing on the win10 machine which turns that machine into a hotspot allowing other devices to see it and connect to the net through it...


1 Select Start (Windows logo) Start button, then select Settings (Gear-shaped Settings icon) > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot.

2 For "Share my Internet connection from", choose the Internet connection you want to share.

3 Select Edit > enter a new network name and password > Save.

4 Turn on Share my Internet connection with other devices.

5 To connect on the other device, go to the Wi-Fi settings on that device, find your network name, select it, enter the password, and then connect.

Except I'm not seeing those settings in my install, I think it still exist but can't dig deep right now to test. I think its because this machine that I'm on doesn't use WiFi so the option isn't available so see if its there for you.

I'm not familiar with the Xfinity. Seems like a proprietary system.

You could use Internet Connection Sharing on the Windows box to connect the router. But you would still need to use the USB dongle to connect to the Xfinity box, I think. And Karbo seems to suspect that too...

Yea ICS will just make his machine the router. Unless he can plug the Xfinity into the router's internet port so that the router can pull an IP from it as "the ISP" the router isn't going to help much. Based on my very loose guess of what XFinity is.

So minus what I'm missing he's better off with ICS but if the other machines/devices he wants to connect aren't WiFi then that won't work because ICS is turning his WiFi card into the hotspot.

It's still remotely possible as there are some legacy registry settings that will turn the machine into a router (IPEnableRouter) but that requires two NICs and a switch. I could probably dream up some other tricks but it'll be too deep/hacky/complex to help here.

And actually, yes I would like to be able to plug non-wifi devices like the motu interface, which doesn't need a network to work with the daw, but if I wanted to setup remote controlling of the interface from my phone or a tablet then it needs to be on a network....same network as the phone/tablet. At least that's how I understand it all.

Also, Xfinity is from Comcast. I subscribe to their internet service at home, and they have hotspots around the area I can connect to using my accounts login info. My daw doesn't have any built in wifi or an internal card, so I have something like this plugged in to the daw to give a way to access this hotspot: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...50359838&psc=1

ICS may work for that.

OK so that fits what I was thinking.

That's usually used as a network storage/file sharing feature, not an internet sharing feature.
