Here's a continuous scrolling comparison between Reaper (top) and Live 10 (bottom):
https://streamable.com/rjwc2
They both have a single audio track with nothing on it but Reaper looks/feels sluggish in comparison, just like how Live 9 used to look.
Live has never been known for its good looks either but the visual updates from Live 9 to 10 (vector graphics & higher frame rate) are something I'd love to see in Reaper.

Good comparison video. In Cockos' defence, read the various threads on Gearslutz and RME's forum about glitches on the 2018 MacBook Pros with USB-C, which is apparently worse on Live than on other software.
In other words, Ableton may have improved the responsiveness of their GUI but potentially at the expense of reliable audio performance under the hood...

Exactly.
And for me: i would always prefer better audioperfomance in a DAW than smoother visual Playhead movement which could cost DAW audioperformance.
Sidenote: i have worked for years and years with Protools,Logic Pro and Live and for me they all had abit jerky visual Playhead movement, be it in very light Projects or heavy Projects: it just never bothered me really.
Just like the non-ultrasmooth Playhead movement in Reaper: who cares.

At least two pages worth of forum posters care apparently.
And it's not a matter of being "non-ultrasmooth", we're not even on that planet yet. We're not at smooth or anywhere near it. More like disconcertingly herky jerky, especially zoomed in at which point it becomes ridiculously bad.
Nor is ANYONE recommending or even suggesting that one iota of audio performance be sacrificed for any reason. That was never part of the equation.

+1 if it's an optional tweak.
Live and Cubase do look cool but they are way heavier than Reaper.

When working with precision automation, like programming orchestral passages, it's very important to see where the playhead really is. It's also very distracting to get playhead update at 4fps.
A huge and very distracting contrast to how smooth everything else is.

I'll yell since everyone should do this:
IF YOU ARE ON A MAC, TRY TO CHANGE COLOR PROFILE IN DISPLAY SETTINGS OF MACOS!
You need to restart Reaper for it to work.
This is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge GUI performance boost. Everyone should know about this, it is essential on macOS!
Personally, i use sRGB (the one at the bottom). Not all of the profile gives you high performance. I don't understand why this is such a guarded secret - it is necessary to do this if you are on macOS, yet you can only find out about it through obscure sources.

+1 please. I've just moved over from Cubase and whilst I am loving the leaner meaner reaper (performance wise) that stuttering play head is making my eyes go :-)
I'm on a Ryzen 3950X 16 core with a GT1080 video card and windows 10.

+1 for sure, if it doesn't affect performance appreciably. As others have said, should be an option in the settings that can be tweaked.

Working for a long time, my eyes get very tired because of such a smooth cursor and my workflow becomes difficult.
Dear developers, fix the play cursor please!

Agree +1. If we can easily set meter update frequency higher without significant cpu loss I don’t know why the same shouldn’t work for the cursor.

Possibly because it has to redraw the entire TCP, it can't just redraw the cursor but the entire area. I think a setting would be fine but I wouldn't expect it to be CPU free just as a heads up.

Hmm that doesn’t make sense to me personally, because why would it need to do that for the edit cursor and not for the meters.. I immagined the cursor more to be kind of a graphical layer that gets displayed at different positions on top of the UI and the position gets updated at a certain frequency.
But I know nothing about programming and graphics (only trying to do some logical reasoning) so it may also be as you say.

It still has to draw all the pixels based on the result to make it look like layers, essentially some logical area like the track area portion of the window. So my guess is the entire track area has to be redrawn at minimum. I'm not saying meters don't, just saying that the track area is probably more and on top of that.
Also since audio processing has priority over graphics, I don't know where that comes into play either but it probably does. I'm not saying it's not possible to make things better via option, but we don't want to assume that it's totally "free" processing/performance wise. If that were the case, seems like it would never have been made slower to begin with.
Some other app may not exhibit for various reasons, uses GPU, more CPU, who knows.

Sure, nothing is free in life. It’s always about calculating cost vs benefit. I just assumed the cost to be in the ballpark of the smooth meters but probably you are right and it is a bit higher. I think we all agree that an option (of ideally a setting for refresh rate in Hz) would be the best solution so each user can decide for himself what is the best trade-off.

Even DAW like mobile apps have a better refresh rate (Flip i.e.) kind of sad tbh in 2021 haha it's just painful and eye stressing to follow on small edits, which as a sound designer and music producer you work on maaaaany times per session.
Reaper is too good to have these small "details"
Hope they work on it +1111111

Another +1. I might be imagining it, but it feels like it gets better and worse depending on which version is installed. I just tried 6.0 from December 2019 and it seems very slightly better. At least usable.

In my situation, the Play Cursor lag in MIDI editor is often even worse than in Main Window.

I am agree, we need a smoother GUI with a smoother playhead cursor,
i can understand that for the old computers the playhead can be stuttering,
but nowadays, i think that the majority of people have a decent computer with more than 2GB of memory.
If Cockos can bring these improvements in the next updates, we thank them to listen their community.

Or at least, make it the "Reaper" way, making a checkbox to enable or disable (so old computers wont struggle)
