This can be done with track grouping (run the action "Track: Set track grouping parameters" to open the grouping dialog). If you want it to be temporary instead, just select both track.

Default track grouping

I checked track grouping and it was enabled but no parameters set. I disabled track grouping but the one track still follows the other in the "mic/direct meter" just to the left of the 'mute' button by turning red, but not the actual mute?

Hi,
it seems you have both (or many) tracks selected.
Cheers,
Miguel

Oh sorry, I misread your post and thought you actually wanted to have two tracks mute at the same time.

The first track might be a folder containing the second one. You should see a little arrow above the track number in the TCP if this the case. Clicking on the folder icon below the track number cycles through the folder modes.

Folders are easy to create by accident when moving tracks around. You can learn how to control this in section 5.14.1 (Drag and Drop Folder Management) of the user guide. https://www.reaper.fm/userguide.php

Here's a video tutorial on folder tracks: https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#29POS7h37Xk.
