Copying and pasting in different octave within midi editor
Can someone tell me how to copy a midi note passage in the midi editor and place it in the same place in a different octave. I cannot find any information on how to do this.
Thanks,
Rich

Well, there's a couple actions you can find in the actions list, "Edit: Duplicate events one octave higher" and "Edit: Duplicate events one octave lower". Could be bound to keyboard shortcuts, toolbar buttons or menus if needed, or simply run from the actions list.
And of course you can simply copy selected notes by ctrl + mouse dragging them up or down. (Doesn't do exactly an octave, of course; you'll need to drag them to the correct place.) That's what I personally like to you, I find it pretty fast and intuitive, and more flexible than an action that just does one thing...

Not trying to compete with elcalen, because he gave you great options. But, just to add to it...
You can select the MIDI notes and hit the "8" on your number keyboard 12 times.
You can also hit "T" (for "Transpose") and enter "12".
EDIT: I stand corrected on this...keep reading.....vvvvvvv

To be clear, those are for moving selected notes, not copying. You'd have to first copy and paste, then move them. But yes, that's another way to do it.
And for the first one, I believe you need to have numlock turned on. And numpad 2 correspondingly moves downward. Also, I believe alt+numpad 8 or 2 move a full octave, no need to repeat 12 times.

You can also select the note(s), Hold C and click 'n' drag. Or paint in a new one where you want it.

Do you mean control (or command on mac)? I don't think holding the c key does anything here...

Yes, but if I understood correctly, and maybe I did not, but he said he wants to copy them to the SAME PLACE but an octave higher. If that's correct, there's no need to copy/paste. They're staying exactly where they are, but an octave higher.

My usual process: Marquee select the notes to copy, Ctrl-C to copy, move cursor to timeline location to paste, Ctrl-V to paste, drag to desired pitch. I do this all the time, to change octaves or to copy to another track.

Is there a key to press so that the notes don't stray from side to side as you dragging them upwards?

By default, holding ctrl+shift while dragging notes is bound to "move note on one axis only". It's also possible to set a mouse modifier to just move vertically.
Or simply have snap on. Though of course that only works correctly if the starts of notes are on the grid. Which for me is almost always the case, so I forgot to mention that in my earlier post when I suggested copying with ctrl+drag...

What you're describing is moving them an octave higher not copying them an octave higher. And copying was definitely what they asked for.

Yes, you're absolutely right. So is elcalen.
For some reason, I had "Moving" the notes in mind, since I put too much emphasis on the words "Same place". I didn't realize the OP wanted to double up the notes an octave higher, rather than simply move the notes up.

That's great!
I've learned more in this thread than I do in a week of real life.

Everyone, Thanks for the replies. I will look into the various options. I think assigning a key from the actions menu might be best.
