Default Waveform view shows different amplitude depending on zoom level

Hi all, I noticed something weird (or perhaps perfectly explainable? :-) yesterday when trying to drop the amplitude of a peak. The peak seems to disappear raise and lower depending on the zoom level (see attached images). My guess is that Reaper is either:

a) not picking the maximum sample in any given bucket when aggregating for zooming but doing some sort of average, but then you'd expect that when you zoomed right in you'd be more likely to see the spike.

b) some sort of intersample peaking thing?

Any ideas?

ok, it looks like when I render that track and zoom around, the amplitude doesn't vary. I forgot to mention that I'm applying some volume automation on the peaks and the window for each volume drop is quite narrow - maybe that's the problem?
