Changing metronome time base?
Is there a way to change this? Say if you want the metronome to sound on the 1/4 notes, or 1/8 notes etc?
Thanks

How about metronomes as
1) piano roll presets (midi items)
2) saved within the Preferences,
3) editable by double clicking the metronome icon, together with the other metronome settings)
4) played by the metronome synth or external midi ?

he can make feature requests out of this world, and turn simple Q & A threads into FR threads faster than the blink of an eye, can leap tall facts with a single bound, faster than a speeding bit of logic.

So you could have multiple click sources, and save presets, with different samples, and time bases.
What other workarounds could I try?
@Sebas777: I think you are addicted to FR. You need to give Justin like 5 years to get caught up to you! lol

Just as I'd expect because you told Reaper that you wanted 8 beats per measure and each eighth-note gets one beat. In 4/4 you'd get 4 beats per measure and a quarter-note gets one beat. If you change the signature to 8/4 as Jason suggests you'll get 8 beats per measure and each quarter-note gets one beat. If that's what you are after then you are good to go.

No problem. If sumpm1 is like me, he finds this MIDI stuff and time signatures confusing too. I mostly record audio but MIDI is becoming a fascinating thing for me.
Time sigs... are actually pretty easy. It's when I start OVER-thinking them that I SCREW UP!

Btw have you noticed:
this is not only a request ("My name is sebas777 and I'm a FR addict..."),
but also a work-around solution (importing a midi sequence on one track and looping it for any metronome you like).
...and how about : "don't stretch items when changing tempo". Does it also work for changing meters ? (in notation programs this kind of locking is used to rebar scores).

Time signatures do confuse me a little, but I have used them successfully, but frequently get them backwards. Like I want 3 bars of 4 to be one measure. Should it be 3/4, or 4/3? I always use trial and error! I will try to find an explanation online.
Thanks for the help.

Just remember the TOP number tells you how MANY beats per measure and the BOTTOM number tells you what type note GETS the beat. i.e., 3/4 = three beats per measure and a quarter note gets 1 beat.
Clear as mud eh?

PS Also get it OUT of yer head that the time signature designation is a fraction. It isn't even though it kind of appears that way.

I tried 8/4, it has no effect, nor does 16/4 or 32/4.

If I change from 4/4 to 8/4, the metronome does not sound twice as fast, it only has a downbeat every 8 clicks instead of 4, and remains the same tempo. I want to get the metronome to click twice as often, but not change my recorded midi.

I just noticed something this weekend when messing with time signature. When you change using Shift-C (i think) to add time signature. It does change accordingly in the main time line. However in MIDI editor, time signature change only read off from ALT-enter preference menu. So, if you have multiple midi clip with different time signature, you can only use one time signature. Someone tell me if I'm missing something. I already did all the search and nothing came up regarding this matter.

I must be missing something here... the time signature and tempo are sort of unrelated things. 8/4 specifies 8 notes per measure and a quarter note gets a whole beat. If your sequencer (Reaper I hope) is set to 100 BPM it WILL play 8/4 at 100 beats per minute... or 4/4... or 6/8 or... always at the project tempo.
What you describe above is exactly what I would expect the metronome to do. I'm confused... again!

All right, start over. Currently, the metronome clicks on every 1/4 note. I want it to click on each of the 1/8 notes. Thats it.
Like having a drummer hitting hihats on 1/8 notes instead of 1/4. The tempo of the song doesn't change, but he hits the hihat twice as often at the same tempo.
It would be nice to be able configure this in the metronome.

I think you can get the metronome to do that if set to 8/8.
However, as you say, this speeds up the midi file.
I suspect this is because the midi file was recorded at 4/4 (for example) and it would be fine if created at the right time signature.
I haven't tried that though to test it.

Basically. But the setting could allow any time base, the most common would be 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16.

Ah... I see! (said the blind dude) Right, you want a double time feel... Like if your sig is 4/4 you want eighth notes. Well, the bad news is, Reapers 'nome ain't gonna do that for you. Like you say, it screws up your already recorded MIDI. As an aside, there are several nice VSTi metronomes on the web. Have a look at one of those maybe?
