unless you have either a soundcard with built in Gm playback capabilities (IE Sounds!) or have the nasty Microsoft GM player enabled, you are only going to hear sound if the output o ght e GM file is routed to either an external MIDI capable multisynth or some form of multiplayer vsti or dxi virtual instrument.
First question must be can you hear any output if you just click on a mifdi file in wondows and it is played through mediaplayer?
If so the only real reason reper wont play it is because you dont have a soft synth enabled.
I use the roland virtual sound canvas a lot as I am used to its sysexes.

i have a free copy of rolands virtual synth from computer music 10 years ago but wont install under Xp..all my midi files where done on the old roland MV30 and cakewalk and the Sc88pro , i sold the sc88,even my yamaha SW1000xg card wont work in my newer Pc with amd chip.ahh the joys...

Your MIDi files will not play unitl they are sent to a MIDI sounds generator.
To see if you get any sound, add ReaSynth to the track. It won't sound right but you should hear something. Then remove it from the track.
Then, go to [Options] >> Preferences >> Audio >> MIDI devices, and in MIDI Outputs enable "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW synth). And on your track, click the [io] button and in MIDI hardware output select that synth.

Can you compress one of the multi-track MIDI files into a ZIP file and post it here as an attachment so we can have a look at it and see what's (not) happening? That will help us help you.
- In XP, right-click the file, select Send To ... compressed (Zipped) folder).
- When you reply, scroll down a bit, open the "Additional Options" section if needed by clicking the double downwards arrows,
- click on [Manage Attachments], browse to your ZIP file, select and Upload it.
