Default Mac OS Big Sur - Issues?

I thought I saw somewhere that there were issues running Reaper and some VST/AUI plugins on Big Sur. I am running Catalina 10.15.7 with no issues. I don't want any issues (-;

Until I am 100% sure it will not mess me up, I am not updating my OS.

Thoughts? Advice?

Thanks!

I can't for the life of me install many many plugins on the newer versions of OSX, people say it can be done, but they refuse to say how. I'll start another thread maybe we'll get some answers.

Hi,

I am running the latest version of Reaper on OSX Big Sur 11.2 beta without any issue.
I did a CLEAN install of Big Sur on an external SSD drive, so not an upgrade from an older OSX version.

Meldaproduction plugins bundle and all Waves 12 plugins just work fine for me in Reaper.

Alot of plugin manufacturers have statements on their website, regarding Big Sur compatibility.
This goes also for manufacturers of soundcards.

Hope this helps !

Are you running the Intel compile or the native ARM compile of REAPER? I use Melda plugins a lot and would be interested to know what you've had such success with.

Are you using the native ARM beta of REAPER, or did you install the one that runs via Rosetta is more the point of my question

Gotcha! Does that mean the plugins you are running aren't run via the 86_64x bridge?

If you are using a version of REAPER compiled to the same architecture as the M1 then most of your plugins have to be run by a bridge supporting their instruction set (Intel).

When a plugin is loaded in this way it tells you that it is run by a bridge.

Well, there's the brick bug that came about in 10.15.7 and continues into OS XI. I'd recommend nothing later than 10.15.6 until this is admitted to and fixed. Bricked firmware means brain dead machine.

FYI if you have any older 32 bit plugins, 10.15 is strictly 64 bit only.

I can personally verify that the 10.15.7 install leads to bricked EFI firmware. I don't think the issue is in 10.15.6 but I'm not going to potentially sacrifice any logic boards to investigate further. Plenty of accounts of the same bug in OS XI in the forums. I've heard a couple claims of this potentially starting in a version of 10.14. Most agree with 10.15.7 though.

If you don't want trouble (and maybe also want to keep some stray 32 bit apps or plugins), stay with 10.13.6.

For those of us contemplating a new Mac (M1) it sounds waiting is the best policy?

I'm currently running Reaper on a Mac mini M1, using the Intel version and it works pretty good so far. For some plugins from smaller developers it sometimes requires some command line tweaks to be able to install them, and for the Waves plugins I had a problem that was solved by simply reinstalling them.
The only thing that doesn't work flawlessly currently is the solo/mute toggling, which take 1-2 sec to take effect.
The guy of White Sea Studio (aka "snake oil guy") recently converted his studio to M1 mac, with Reaper.
