[2.42pre1-3]making custom action freezes reaper and wont leave process (resolved)
when i make this macro:
and assign it to a midi controller (once on the sustain pedal on my MK-425C and then also on a button on my keystation pro 88)
reaper gets really unstable, and recording doesnt work -- and im forced to end process, but it doesnt leave memory for some reason...
this is with no vstis, no tracks, no nothing.

Is it weird when mapped to a key, or just to a midi controller?

ok it didnt freeze at all
but it simply did not work.
i inserted one track
hit record
tried the shortcut (which i made ctrl+alt+O)
and nothing happened.
shift + 1 made a "donk" noise (windows sound) but didnt stop recording
and "A" did the same thing.
i have no idea

Did you select the Alternate Recording section from the Action List before making the macro?
If so, have you been to Options, Preferences, Recording to make sure that the alternate recording assignments are enabled?
Just a couple of thoughts ....

Hmm ... it works here, mapped to a key or a midi controller (I left it mapped to my foot pedal, nice idea ... screw that take! *stomp* ).
So there's some other variable. Like Nicholas said, if you have the "alt recording" actions enabled (most people don't, in fact I bet almost nobody does) then you need to make sure your custom action is in that section and not the main section.
Is this a single or multi processor PC?

with that option UNticked, the regular keyboard shortcuts work,
but assigning it to a midi controller still locks up the system.
(im using a foot pedal too, that rocks)
its the pc in my sig

No quick answer for you I'm afraid because I can't reproduce. Does anyone else have this problem?

In the actions dialog there's a dropdown at the top right for section. Actions in one section are valid in some specific context: "main" actions are valid in the main arrange view, "midi editor" actions are valid in the midi editor, etc. If you enable prefs->audio->recording->use alternate keyboard actions when recording, then only the "main (alternative recording)" actions are valid when recording. If that pref is unchecked (default), the "main" actions are valid regardless of whether you're recording and the "main (alternative recording)" actions are never valid.

i tried both modes --
let me explain
simply having it in my main recording actions, and having the alternate thing UNCHECKED makes my system bogged down --
having alternate mode on, and enabling the action there, it recieves the midi but does nothing. it does NOT slow the system down.
having the box unchecked and putting the shortcut on both, hitting the switch does nothing.
same thing with the box checked.
so it does nothing (although reaper receives the midi) -- except for when i do it with the main actions -- then, it slows down my system.
strangely, i got it to work with a button on my MK-425C -- it worked perfect.
but not the sustain pedal.
i tried 2 different sustain pedals.
I will now test my keystation pro 88.
it hangs when using a button on that keyboard
and it wont leave the RAM.

Glad you got it fixed JBM!
If you (you being some future reader of this thread) have a problem with midi controller shortcuts hanging Reaper, map your controller device as an input device (if it isn't already) and record a bit of moving the control, then look at what you recorded in midi event list view. If you see a bunch of initialization or duplicate messages for that controller switch/knob/whatever, there may be some service on your PC that's causing a message flood, which makes the shortcut trigger repeatedly and hang up.
