Yep, it is helpful; there is nothing wroing with breaking all the glass bongs and throwing away the rolling papers from time to time. I'm with ya but as you can clearly see the password thing isn't helping me at all right now.

@Karbo: lol, you know me pretty well.
I come from a family of males (uncles, etc, etc)) where pretty lively debates were the norm from like, early childhood, watching and later participating, at family gatherings. It's probably why I need "assistance?" avoiding them , it just all feels so... normal.
An hour long backyard barbeque debate about Vietnam or politics or something was pretty normal in my family. But yeah, i need help not rubbernecking. . A cop throwing up a detour a few blocks from the scene of the accident helps a little.
Now... if I can just leave this thread I can work on the other 9 steps.

Why not put the lounge back to what it was, and add a new (or sub) forum called 'The Soapbox' or something to that effect for conspiracy/political/debate topics that has the password thing on it? Then the mods can simply make judgement calls to move stuff there as they see fit.
|
This is what I've been pulling for for years... If this forum has gotten so bad that the moderators hafta utilize a password feature for the fucking lounge then... come the fuck on.
This may just be the straw that breaks the camels back for me staying here.

Yea, I remember we spoke about this a year or two ago. We both come from families that argue for the sheer fun of having the argument. Who cares about the subject, its all about the exchange and interaction.

I think the Lounge password is an excellent idea, because even though I'm much, much better at talking about religion and politics than I am about digital recording in Reaper, I come here to learn about the latter, not to get on a soapbox about the former, and I'm sure a great many people would rather not have to sift through reams of non DAW-related content when clicking on New Posts.
What's never been clear to me is where the line blurs between Reaper-specific and more generalized audio recording subject matter. Virtually anyone who would be interested in Reaper and in these forums will almost certainly be interested in KVR-like and Gearslutz-like topics as well, many of which currently end up in the lounge next to the serial killers and the corrupt politicians...
Why not have the current Reaper General Discussion and Reaper Compatibility forums, and then add a Digital Audio General Discussion forum to cover all of the DAW-but-not-exactly-Reaper content that currently goes into the lounge? Then everyone can know that if we opt not to login to the lounge we won't miss anything interesting or newsworthy that is audio-related.

I sorta wonder if they should remove the reaper requirement from General Discussion and just make it general discussion about recording, making and enjoying music. All the philosopical, religious, political stuff still goes to the lounge.

We'd still need a place for asking specific Reaper questions. No?

Uhmm.... No, it doesn't eliminate reaper, just removes it from the main description. It prevents the "huh oh, can't post here, because it isn't reaper" thing that ends up in the lounge now. We have enough sub forums as it is; evenutally we'll have the "record button forum"

If I ask for a "record button forum", should this post go to the lounge then?
Sorry, couldn't resist.

I seriously think we should subdivide the lounge to be honest:
Religion: If you worship someone and plan on continuing to worship them after you're dead (or the opposite), post here.
Politics: If you worship someone and don't give a shit what happens to you or them after you're dead, post here.
Bitching & Moaning: General letting off of steam for no good reason and the like, post here.
UniBomber: You despise everything about anything and need to tell everyone about it, post here.
I Knew It!: General conspiracy theories, world domination and so forth, post here.
The Bubble: You don't see anything wrong anywhere and wouldn't care even if you did, post here.
Pretty please?

We also need:
Say What?!?:For parodies of the above.
Your age,not your shoe size(US,CA,UK):For immature behavior.
The Cage:Where debates get shunted when they get ugly.
You're Wrong:Where the debates that end up in The Cage start.

Yes, Karbo, but my question was not about a "record button forum" going to the lounge, more about whether dumb questions like mine should go to the lounge.
I tried to be funny in which I seemed to have miserably failed.
IMHO the lounge password thingy is quite cumbersome. I'd prefer to have in the line "User CP, Track Bugs/Feature Requests, Search, New Posts, Mark Forums Read, Log In/Out" to have an entry "Show lounge" (ie. if it's shown "Hide lounge") which would things make way easier, because the decision would be just one click.

If you logoff and then re-login it will make you enter the password again. Thus leaving it out of the "new posts" searches for you.

And if you DO want to see the lounge, but keep it separate from the non-Lounge forums, you can use another browser that you rarely use (eg IE), where you have entered the password.

I'm guessing that it was done to prevent lounge threads from showing up when clicking 'new posts' and when doing a forum search. I noticed that when using the forum search, the lounge doesn't show in the search options unless the lounge password has already been entered.

A suggestion taking on board the above comments
The mods still mod but we have a layer of social modding too in the lounge.
Say 5 or six folks gong your post it is deleted. You can complain to a mod who then decides. They do anyway. If you are gonged too much by different people then the mods can ban you for a time if they agree with the group moderation.
This would free the moderators up a bit and be fun for the collective consciousness (or conscience). If it is reserved for really extreme stuff then lively debate will still go on as it always has.
The rationale is that it is a music software production forum, at its core, and that can bring out tempers and extreme opinions but most of us do not want to read troll posts or really out there hate stuff.
This could be coupled with the great suggestion for a password. That also prevents those that may have had a bit too much substance abuse from saying things they may later regret.
