grabbing samples like on a PC?
Kind of a Mac dummy here... though I have spent a little time on them with Reaper and other stuff...
I work mainly on a 64 bit PC with Reaper
In that, I can hold Control and Alt and drag any item from a track to wherever... like to a normal folder or directly into a Kontakt instrument, etc.
AFAIK, on a Reaper Mac we cannot do this, ..but I'd love to learn that I am just ignorant as to how to do it on Mac...
Is there some way?

Good question and a longstanding wish for me, being a longtime mac user.
I dunno about the exact reason but somehow, on mac, dragging and dropping from Arrange view in Reaper to a sampler instrument is impossible.
This is not only true for Reaper, the same goes for other DAW's on mac.
To be exact: Cubase on mac has drag-drop ability, but this only is valid for dropping from Cubase Arrange view to a Cubase "native" sampler instrument, like Groove Agent or Halion.
I think the whole issue on mac has something to with the difference in file system between windows and mac. (not sure though).
What i do as a remedy workflow in Reaper is:
- Glue the item i want to have in a sampler instrument.
By glueing the item, it becomes an audio file on itself.
- Then i open Project Bay.
There i can see the glued item in source media column.
- Now i can drag that file from Project Bay onto the GUI of a opened sampler instrument, like
Kontakt, Falcon, Geist 2, Maschine, etc.
I know it's abit cumbersome workflow.
But for me, i got used to it and is still pretty fast.
Hope 4 u2.
Hope this helps !

Hi Van... thanks for that method... yeah, I've found a workaround or two also but nothing as direct and simple as the Cntrl-Alt-drag and drop on the PC's...
so it goes
I won't be at my friends Mac to test for few days yet, but I wonder this:
Lets say you have an audio item on a track.. and then use the time selection method to copy out to another track a little piece of that to a new track and name it and glue it to itself...
and save the project [I always save projects so that all the audio goes into an audio folder in the project folder]... so now that little piece of audio will be in there...
and then it could be gotten to in Media Explorer...
so on PC I can drag right out of ME into a new Kontakt instrument...
I wonder if that works on a Mac? [drag out of ME into a sampler]

it's not control-alt. It's cmd-alt to do it on mac and you can drag right from the arrange page.
But it also depends on the plugin if it will be accepted. Reasamplomatic5k takes wav files and ezdrummer will take MIDI files.
I think kontakt is fine but laying out samples in kontakt is much simpler in the standalone version since you can pop out the mapping window.
Export your edited and named files from reaper and then drop into the mapping window.

Hey there Hopi !
Yes, that would work 100% ok :0)
Sidenote: you really don't have to save the Project first, to be sure the glued item will be in your Project folder, as an audiofile.
It will land there as soon as you executed the glue action.
Warm Regards !

Kontakt is not fine;
1) Open Kontakt in Reaper.
2) Open it's mapping editor.
3) Drag an audio item, right from Arrange View in Reaper, with hold CMD-ALT keys, to the mapping editor from Kontakt.
Outcome: The dragged audio item doesn't land in Kontakt's mapping editor, it's not loaded.
Dragging to other area's in Kontakt doesn't work either.
As a matter of fact, in my experience, (as a Reaper-mac version user), this straight drag-dropping from Reaper's Arrange to any sampler instrument's GUI doesn't work. (Big Cry).
I tested this with alot of sampler vsti's in Reaper.
As already posted in this thread, the culprit is this, as explained by schwa:

right Van... I guess some of the issues is gonna be the tiddyness factor for file names, etc.... but each one can work out their own strategy for that, eh?
so what the heck... a few extra steps but we can get the job done

works on my rig
I'm on a 2011 Macbook running 10.6.8 and can drag right from the finder into Kontakt directly, or into the mapping editor, no hotkeys/shortcuts needed. I'm in the process of switching from Digital Performer to Reaper and could always drag and drop in DP as well.

The problem is not from Finder to the sampler, it's from Reaper's Arrange View into a sampler. Works perfect on PC, you can highlight a tiny piece of an item and Ctrl-Alt-Drag just that piece into a sampler, and it renders just that section in realtime.
