Default Fade ins not working on certain formats

Doing my first video edit in Reaper.

Tried an HVEC mp4 and an MKV and neither would respond to an item fade in.

Reconverted to an H264 mp4 and works fine.

Is this expected behaviour?

So it seems it's not to do with the format but when I normalize the audio in the video file......

Are you talking about using included video processor preset 'Items fades affect video'?

If so, just in case, what got me stumped at first is that it's not working when having take volume automation.

edit:
What you're seeing might be a different issue though.
If I don't have take volume automation it always worked for me so far (also with mp4 iirc).

Thanks :-) I did just check but no, I've not got volume automation on the items.

Having some weird times trying to work out the fades and also crossfades. Kenny makes it look so easy here:
