Shure sm58 LCE- - What's the E?
I bought sm58 that's got LCE on the box. LC is less cable but what does the E stands for? Not finding any info on the Net about it so maybe someone here might know.
I got some older sm57's and they're just LC so I wonder what it means - hopefully not E grade :-)

Out of curiosity, how did you get to "E" grade?
The way I recall, that one came with an adapter to go from "American..." stand thread to "European..." stand thread.
While I've never seen anyone actually say it?
I always assumed that the "E..." was for "Europe..."

I see - Europe. Well I'm in OZ, so I guess that's almost close enough.
How did I get to E grade... Thinking maybe it was way way bellow B grade, you know like the clone ones for $20 but those might be actually rate Z grade.

Wasn't "LC" low-cost, as in "Made in Mexico"?

Yep. that's what they say today. In 1981, there was no "LC" version, as you can see in this old catalogue:
https://d24z4d3zypmncx.cloudfront.ne...icrophones.pdf
It was just an SM57, or an SM57-CN, with included cable.
When they moved production to Mexico and dropped the price to sub 100$, all distributors seemed to think "LC" stood for "low-cost".
"Less cable" would suggest that most Shure mics would come with a cable, which they don't. Why is there no "LC" version of most other Shure mics?
Sounds like typical marketing BS.

If the available version has no cable then obviously there won't be any LC version.

Well it works just as well as my '57s so that's what matters anyway.
I've been using 57s for years but this is my first 58. I thought it might be fraction smoother for vocals. It does seem to have slightly more leveled frequencies. What I mean is that when you say a word, the bass frequencies and top end ones blend smoother together. 57 is more live sounding due to it's exposed capsule. It's only a small difference, yet it can help vocals sit more within in the nix. But that depends on what the song needs really.

Yes, that is exactly what I remember.
So again I thought "E" stands for "extra-cheap".

Haven't noticed any quality difference. But I never could compare two pristine ones, so that just tells you my ears aren't that good
Wish Sennheiser would follow Shure's example and offer the MD421U and MD21U at sub 100 € too. Don't know what the U means either. Some rare German word for "black"? U-boot black?

What's the Difference Between the SM58 and the SM57?

DVDoug: Interesting. I had forgotten that I used an SM57 for my vocals for years because it worked better than an SM58 for me.
Since then I have switched to Sennheiser cheapies and my beloved MG88, but I am now going to try and sm57 at my next gig on May 22nd just for fun. Better top end and more proximity suits me fine. The main reason I bought that Beyerdynamic MG88.
